Preset Banks seem to offer a huge opportunity for FX automation within BiaB (and RB for that matter). From a modest amount of research into the VST implementation I've got an idea how things work with preset banks.

Both the VST and VST host have an opportunity to save and load preset bank files. Obviously the VST gets first dibs since the host has no idea what preset bank file you are going to load until it's loaded.

Since we can manually load a preset bank it's also clear the host can load a bank after the VST has done it's thing. So if BiaB were to save the preset bank files for each slot with the song file, as it does for the plain presets, then we could have a user defined preset bank for any song we want.

That's good as far as it goes. By having a preset bank load with a song file the user could easily change the presets for a given track. That might be nice from the point of view of changing the sound of a track while the song is open but I think it can go much further.

If we embed a user defined midi event in a track there seems to be no reason why BiaB couldn't change the preset during playback. I would envision something like this. Send a command 200 which BiaB could interpert as slot 2 bypass. 404 would mean slot 4 preset 4 etc.

Now you would have to allow a ms or two for the VST to change preset or disable itself but I think this would turn an awesome product into something for which I don't have a superlative.

So a question before I put this into the wishlist. Is there any undocumented way to do this already? Comments?

In RB, you can use load and save 'group' (loads all settings in a given set of plugins) so you can load 4 VST's at a time with custom settings. As opposed to using 'save preset' which counts on the plugin's bank saving options available (I think). The difference being whether the settings are saved as part of the seq file or as a preset for the plugin (which may /may not support this feature). At least that is how I have observed it.

Not sure if 'group' feature is available in BB.
By the time I'm working on plugin settings I'm in RB.

For effects that support it, RB can send control changes or sysex messages to change them when you want to, but it can become more involved.
When working in RB, having the preset change for a given effect is pretty much a moot point; I just put the section I want treated differently on a different track and use different effects or settings.
No worries. Plenty of tracks to work with.

This can't be done in BB (due to limited track number), so I guess in BB it would be useful.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Hi rharv. Yes the group settings are available in BiaB and they are very useful. However, it's automation of a single plugin I'm after. The ability to trigger a stompbox in the middle of a song would be a great feature.

That would work for me when I'm trying to master a song. Most of the time though I'm trying to make a cover backing track to play bass, or sing, along with and I prefer BiaB because I can get slighly different arrangements each time on the unfrozen tracks.

I do understand that some effect support this but because it isn't universal, nor standardized, it would be much better for BiaB to support preset changes.

I sure think it would and since there doesn't seem to be any undocumented way to do this I guess it's time for the Wish List. Thanks for the comments.
