Hi,

Anybody got video capture software to recommend.

I will be using it for a hobby project i.e.- Band In A Box Help file.

I wish to video the screens as I use Band In A Box to show users how to use the program.

I have downloaded the following file - Debut Video Capture Software.
But I can only get it to show properly if I use an FLV extension (it does save as avi etc but the video is not as clear - viewing menus for example - as the flv type.

Any advise would be welcomed.

George

I think the CamStudio open source would serve your needs - and the price is right.

I purchased Movavi for its hi number of video and audio file types
it handles. Very easy to use. It also had V editor. Audio capture and other
goodies in it. Bout $50 Anything you can hear or see on your screen it will capture.

http://www.movavi.com/screen-capture/

You can try it out free for 30 days, but has watermark in results.

All but 4 of the early Video's were created with it.

I have used Camtasia but, IIRC, the full-featured demo is time-limited to 30 days.

"Lightworks" (qv) is an open source video editor but the learning curve is a brick wall. If you have ample time to wrap your head around it, you will have a professional, Hollywood class, video production studio.

Thanks to all,

Joe V - CamStudio Downloaded and tried it (didn't work well on my computer)

seeker - Movavi Very professional but too much for me.

JohnJohnJohn - Camtasia same as above.

Don - "Lightworks" Wow - need a diploma to work this one out.

I found the following Debut Video Capture Software and it just works (Audio as well).

Thanks for taking the time.

LICEcap: http://www.cockos.com/licecap/
LICEcap can capture an area of your desktop and save it directly to .GIF (for viewing in web browsers, etc)and it is free and easy to use. I do not know if this is what you want or if you have the means to edit the resulting gif, which I can do in Serif MoviePLus.

Try checking these videos out:

Doug Mckenzie is forum member who hasn't posted here for some time. I remember a couple of years ago he described exactly what he used to produce his videos, maybe you can email him.

With Windows 7 you should have a Snipping Tool. It will prove handy in modifying screen shots.

Re: Lightworks, watch the tutorials and they will get you going in the right direction. Agreed, the esoteric video production terminology are a foreign language but the rewards of learning them are great.

I did not mention, as you said you were looking for video capture, that LICEcap records video, to be saved as a gif. I assumed you would realise that as that was the topic of conversation maybe I should have made it more clear.

Hi jcspro40,

I think that you are right.
I know any new program needs to be investigated and learned but I don't want to learn a program that takes the fun out, well, not at my time of life.

Hi Alyn,

Thanks for pointing that out.

I have found the perfect program that just works.
Debut Video Capture installed and just works right off the bat.
The only thing (on my laptop, HP g6) is that I have to save as a flv file.
This can then be converted to a wmv or whatever you like with any video converter software.

As I said it just works without having to set-up anything including audio.

George

P.S And it's free

Another free video screen capture program I found some time since is Freez Screen video capture, download from here

http://www.smallvideosoft.com/

It is a simple program that works very well with microphone input but does not capture any sound with the video, only with microphone. Handy for constructing some tutorials for using software, but might be not much use for any musical software if you need to capture the sounds the software makes.

I will also say thanks for the info regarding the Debut video capture George, I will install that and explore what it can do.

Hi Cornet Nev,

I don't know if Debut video capture will be useful to you or not, as I said it just worked from the get-go.
I just installed it and hey presto when I ran it it was ready to record (even itself).
The only thing that I have found out with the program is that it only saves as Avi or Flv.
If I save as Avi it seems to cut off a little of the screen, but this does not happen with Flv.
