Hi Paul, BIAB is brilliant software and, from what you describe of your situation, you'll have a truckload of fun writing songs and preparing arrangements. You'll also find it incredibly useful for your performances. Below is a link to a song that I recently co-wrote with Floyd Jane. Apart from Floyd's singing, everything you hear was created directly in BIAB. No live instruments were used. This will give you an idea of the quality of the sound.
