Poorly made MIDI file is the most likely reason, Woody.

You could try opening said MIDI file in RealBand, which would yield a track by track of what's going on.

Likely better to just go find another MIDI file. Those free downloadable MIDI files are worth what you paid for 'em. Not all were made with notation in mind, many were made by people who can't even read music. A lot of 'em were made by someone simply playing while recording to MIDI on a keyboard, you'll find lots that are in another key other than the default MIDI key of C but the creator just played whatever key they knew without bothering to set the Key in their sequencer, which can yield notation with all sorts of wondrous accidentals.
