Personal observation: There are a lot of people now who feel like they have to put a dedicated microphone on every single drum in a kit, and two microphones on just about everything else when recording a live band. All those microphones usually exceed the number of inputs available on the portable digital recorder so folks start looking to sync several recorders together in order to have enough inputs to simultaneously have these instruments recorded to its own track. The problem is that synchronization such as MTC is not sample accurate. There is some slop as the slaves follow the master. Any combination of microphones that pick up the same source but span two or more recorders are going to have phasing issues. I've helped a lot of people synchronize Tascam Portastudios together and always caution them about spanning things like the drum kits over multiple recorders. Phasing is a problem that people new to recording don't consider when multi tracking and then struggle trying to figure out why their mix sounds horrible while the individual tracks sound good.
