Actually there are some great sound fonts out there. it is true that many are old. But there is software that allow one to make sound fonts. The sound font is a typical layered sample, that was in the format for the synth built in the creative cards. Sonic implants has some very good ones. The point is that there are many options, and few are perfect, i try to gleen from each what i can to get the sounds i like. I use fonts, sampless and synths regularly. Take a look at all of them.
