Does anyone know if it's possible to send patch changes to SampleTank? If so, how?
I have some really good guitar sounds now and would love to be able to change them 'on the fly'.
Thanks Paul

Hi Paul,
In the User's Manual, they talk about "Program Change Association" on page 39. A quick read indicates that this might do the job you want. I'm not sure, though, because I haven't played around with it.
I'd be surprised if S/Tank can't be made to change patches because it's amazing software.
Regards, Noel

Thanks Noel. I didn't even see the manual in the installation folder. It looks like you are right. It seems not too hard to do. I'll give it a try later when I get a chance.

Noel,
Excellent post, does sound like it may do the trick. I will work on that a bit more later today...
Great post.
Page 61 covered back-up button, and it does save a set of voices current in the tracks area, but only to a file. No association with the tracks area upon reload.
Mike, thanks for the thread.

Tried the following.
Opened BiaB song with midi on soloist track.
Put Sampletank (ST) on soloist and clean guitar sample on channel 8.
Verified it's working.
Associated Program Change 60 with a fuzz guitar sound according to ST user manual.
Put a Program Change command of 60 on the soloist using the piano roll.
Verified the PC command was sent on channel 8 using midi monitor.
Played song.
Unfortunately ST did not change patches. Does anyone know if the free version shipped with BiaB is perhaps incomplete? Any other reason this wouldn't work?
Thanks.

I could be wrong, but I think the problem, and the reason you can't make the change midstream, is because the synth (SampleTank, as well as other similar VSTi's) must load the sound from disk into memory before you can use the sound. If it did that in midstream, especially with a sound (patch) that is large, then you would most likely have a glitch in the soundstream while it is loading and subsequently trying to play the new sound.

John,
I'm not about this either, but I think that's where the stmp files come in. It's possible to create a collection of sounds and then use those. I'll have to sit down and have a play around and find out!
Welcome back to the forums. It's good to see your name popping up again.

Hi Paul, I've managed to get SampleTank changing patches. As suspected, it's all to do with the STMP files. I haven't yet created my own STMP file (although that looks pretty straightforward), I simply used one that came with Omnisynth 2 and that sets SampleTank to emulate General Midi sounds. What I did was the following ... 1. Load in a BIAB song file that has a melody. 2. Set a general midi synth as my default synth. (I used VSC/DXi. I did this because BIAB likes to have a soft synth installed as a default synth.) 3. Put SampleTank on the "Melody Track" in the VSTi setup. 4. Setup SampleTank for General Midi using Ominsynth 2 as per THESE INSTRUCTIONS. 5. Exit VSTi. 6. Go to Piano Roll Mode. 7. Select "Program" as shown below. 8. Click on the timeline at the position that I want the patch change to occur (I didn't worry about what instrument it said at this point in time). 9. Hover the mouse over the patch change until I get then double-headed vertical arrow shown below. 10. Left-click and drag the double-headed arrow up/down to obtain the sound I want. 11. Play the song. Hope this helps, Noel P.S. Paul, thank you for inspiring me to do this. I'll put the information over under "Tips and Tricks" in case it's useful for others.

Thanks Noel. That gave me at least partial success. I was able to get patches to change. There are a couple of issues though.
First, either ST or BiaB is using one based numbering while the other is using zero based numbering. That means the PC command inside BiaB needs to be one higher than that in ST.
However, the bigger issue seems to be that ST doesn't want to load the stmp file with the song. That means you have to open ST each time and open the map file. Did you find a way to get ST to load with the map?
BTW, would you mind if I use this for the BiaB wiki later when we've got all the issues worked out? Thanks.
Paul

Excellent write up guys.
This is one of those confusing things because Biab plays in real time. Probably 98% of ST users don't know about Biab. This problem never comes up in a regular DAW bacause nothing is being changed live in real time. All the patches are set up in a DAW ahead of time before you hit play. The only time live patch changes comes up is when playing GM midi files and we all know ST is not a standard GM synth. It's cool that you found this workaround.

Hi Paul,
Feel totally free to use whatever posts of mine you see as useful for your wiki. There's no need to ask. You've got a great site and it's a real asset to the BIAB user. If my posts help with your knowledge-base, I'm delighted to pass them on.
As far as I've been able to ascertain, BIAB does not save the STMP files with a song. I'm not sure how hard this would be to program but maybe it's a Wishlist item.
Regards, Noel

One thing that I have noticed in Sampletank using the Omnisymth expansion and loading the map (Seeker posted about this first on the off-topic forum) is that if using Sampletank as a default synth, that if I change the patches on Sampletank the biab save alone won't bring the patches back in Sampletank when reopening the song.
I have to use the save as in Sampletank and when the song is reloaded in biab I can see the song in Sampletank's Load slot.
Probably has been covered before on here.
Musiclover
ps just tried this again and seems to be saving ok provided I change the patches from within biab, which is probably the right and easiest way to go about patch change.
