I started yesterday and find it fascinating as well as very educational. The instructor is excellent. My biggest problem is my age-related memory leak.

We aren't allowed to collaborate on classwork or lessons but I'm just curious to know who/whom else is taking the course.

Poppa, I've learned a lota stuff already. Like:

There ain't no good in an evil-hearted woman; And I ain't cutout to be no Jesse James; You don't go writin' hot checks down in Mississippi; And there ain't no good chain-gangs!

If you mean Berklee college of music, there are a number of people on the forum there (myself included).

But there are tons of people from elsewhere, too, so you might not find us in the crowd.

Don,

I was at a Pat Pattison seminar in January this year and he said that over 30,000 people had signed up at that stage. I imagine more joined in between then and now.

Enjoy the journey. He's the world's best.

Regards,
Noel

I'm on it as well plus a music production course.

Just wondering though as I won't be able to devote much time to any of them, whether they kick you off if they think you are not really following the courses?

I would just hope they keep sending the emails with links to lectures then I can pick and choose what I want.

Anyone know?

Since you must sign in for each class and answer the questions that follow the lesson plan, they certainly know if you aren't participating.

I am concerned about, what I understand to be a class requirement, and that is the singing of our individual song compositions for classroom critique. I am mute. I'll probably take a zero for that lesson or perhaps they will let me substitute other work.

Be assured that everyone in my class will learn about PG Music Software Products. Maybe Peter will put me on Commish. Chuckle.

I am taking the class also. I have completed the videos, quizzes and assignment for week one (I knew I wouldn't have much time this week!). It seems like it will be a good class. I am only worried that I won't be able to keep up due to life getting in the way (ha, ha). I did order Pat's book, Writing Better Lyrics, but it hasn't arrived yet. I guess since it is a free class, buying the book wasn't that big of a deal.

I wouldn't worry about the singing thing. Explain your situation and then use midi to create the melody.

I did miss one question on the "6 friends" quiz, but I think my viewpoint is just as correct (ha, ha). I see no need to re-take the quiz just to get 100% (unless by re-taking it, I would learn something, of course).

How is it free, when I google it I find a $1,200 tuition fee online?

It might be a Berklee course but it is being given through https://www.coursera.org/

Here is the class itself: https://www.coursera.org/#course/songwriting - and it is free. Now it is a 6-week class, so the Berklee class might be 12 weeks -- you would have to check that out.

I'm taking the songwriting course as well. Writing Better Lyrics is available in a Kindle Edition for immediate delivery to your device so no need to wait for delivery of a hard copy unless you don't like eReaders.

Update: Kindle editions available for entire reading list with the exception of The Songwriters Rhyming Dictionary.

The "Introduce Yourself" thread shows over 600 posts, so there's quite a lot of people signed up.

I know you've looked at various assistive technologies for that.

I just ran across a free Vocaloid clone called UTAU. It's a Japanese product, so it's targeted at the Japanese language, and has a Japanese GUI. But there is an English translation package available for it, along with tools for allowing it to sing in English.

Even so, it's got a bit of a steep learning curve associated with it, mostly because you're still dealing with Japanese phonemes and an only half-translated interface. Plus, it's very much mouse-based, so it might be a bit wearisome to try to use the interface if you've got difficulties.

Basically, it's got a database of about 50 phonemes. It pitch-shifts vowel sounds, and concatenates samples together by cross-fading them. It's got some pretty sophisticated options available, and a lot of different free voicebanks are out there. I've heard some decent English singing done with it, mainly on slower songs. Intelligibility tends to go down a bit as the rate increases.

Yep, I'm taking it too.

Going to be some hard slogging, but if I can learn to write my own lyrics, that'll be a huge boon to me. Writing melodies and chord progressions are my strong point, so I definitely need to do some work in this area.

Loving it so far. Still got homework to do for this week.

Me too! The slow-speaking instructor is easy to follow and rivets my compromised attention span.

Would just like to add that the "Introduction to Music production" course is great as well, runs for six weeks.

I think its possible to do a late signup and though not able to take part in other aspects of the course its possible to watch the videos. (main thing for me anyways)

I will mainly just watch the videos in both courses and there is also an option at right of video on page to download them to your computer as well.

I'm very impressed with the way Pat teaches. Some of his stories and ways he makes his points crack me up. I was concerned not being a beginner I might be bored but he's quite the character keeping it interesting with his approach.

Hey I think we owe you a big thank you Josie for telling us about these courses in the first place. Pat is indeed a great guy. I think he could make his liviing in more ways than one doing a one man show other than songwriting.

Some people must have paid good money to Berklee to do this kind of course in the past, so its unbelievable that its free.

I would imagine the video lectures will be taken down week by week, thats why I am downloading them.

I'm enjoying the music production videos as well.
