After having mixed several wave tracks I usually put a PG peak limit on my AUX insert (to avoid clipping) but sometimes I get a severe pumping effect which isn't nice, how do i avoid this?

The AUX out is 'added to' the main track outs. So peaklimiting here makes a signal very strong, then adds it to the same signal (making it stronger yet with no limiting). Have to be careful with AUX slots..
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

But isn't it the way to ensure that the final mix isn't clipped?

Not in the AUX slot. AUX gets added to other stuff (including the original track output).
Track output goes to main out (soundcard), controlled by track slider AUX Send goes to AUX slot, and gets mixed back into the main out (soundcard). They are two separate streams that meet later in the signal flow.
So your AUX PeakLimiter is indeed limiting, but then further down the line it is being added to the track output.
Unless you have the Track fader at 0 (so it doesn't feed the Main Out) and using only the AuxSend dial for volume on those tracks, you are doing the above. Try PeakLimit in Main out, or as a per track insert instead. AUX is for additive effects (those you want to add to the existing tracks along with the original track sound. Main Out slot is labeled A1 at bottom right of mixer usually.
I should draw up a very simple routing diagram one of these days.

The above quick (ugly) sketch gets my point across; limiting the AUX send does not really control the final out. The track outputs get added to it.. so you have a limited signal being added to the original signal. Audio is additive.

Thanks Rharv! I guess that this is common denominator for many a mixing desk, PG should consider adopting your drawing ;-)

It's too simple and incomplete for reference. But if it helped, cool.

I'm sure I'm not the only one lacking understanding of these basics and understanding how the signal is routed in the process. It is nothing you can look up (I guess?) I gather that your knowledge stems from the old analog tape days, way before the PC's entry into the studio, but then again, I may be wrong :-) Anyways your drawing helped!

Isn't there a return level on the aux busses as well? Or is that simply controlled by the volume(s) of whatever effects you have in the aux bus? In my DAW, there are both aux send levels as well as aux return back to the sending track.
