What an inspiration! I have made it my mission in 2013 to learn to play the guitar properly. Been playing for years but always just to accompany myself singing. Enough excuses now. You have inspired me to put in the hours practice. Tonight I timed my practice for the first time. It felt like hours but was only 45 minutes! It just shows that you are probably right about musicians practicing LESS than they think and not more. Its easy to read a novel or watch TV or hang out on the forums for 45 minutes but to sit and put in the practice on the guitar is not something that comes naturally. Your progress has shown me that I do actually have to work at it and it won’t happen by osmosis.

All the best

Hey Guys...and gals. Thanks for all the love. Its nothing really.

Joanne... you want a reality check? Use a 'timer' backwards. Meaning put say 3 hours on a timer and start the countdown and then begin practice. Each time you 'stop' to use the restroom, answer an email, get a bit etc. you have to stop the timer. Geez. It took me 7 hours to get through my first 3! Thats when I woke up to the truth. I have good days and bad days...and long forum posts...and etc. and on and on. Hope you really rock it this year. Cheers!

OK, for the 10,000 hours we don't count bathroom breaks... got it

I watched a good guitar video with Paul Gilbert, and he advises practicing something that is boring/technical/repetitive while watching a TV show (Gilligan's Island was the specific recommendation). Because you are building muscle memory, and can focus your mind on other things. Just as long as you don't put the guitar down and just watch TV!

Have Fun!

As a child I used to drive my family wild by doing exactly that. Not every day but enough to cause friction. My mum used to knit yet when I compared her "clicking" to my "plunking" all hell broke loose!

Tex, I really enjoyed your demo.....great playing! You are proving that practice pays off. You obviously have loads of technique to spare!
For the last 20 odd years, I have been used to practising daily for an hour......but recent illness has meant upping it to, at least a couple of hours daily. Including a lot of Country flatpicking on Acoustic guitar & banjo.....still improving!
Keep up the good work. I look forward to hearing lots more from you. Regards, Joe G

I particularly liked the above-the-nut, B-Bend technique in the demo. Perfectly executed!

From one guitarist to another, you were meant for the Tele! You have really nailed the picking/plucking style! Your playing hand was excellent, very well placed with no wasted movements. And your picking hand beautifully combines the plectrum with your middle & ring finger picking right under it.

It is a style I wish I took the time to learn. Nevertheless, I enjoy more watching others do it far better than I ever could try!

Hey, speaking of picking styles, when you get a chance check out a guy named, Doyle Dykes. He uses a banjo style roll while his playing hand would be inverting chords much the way they would be played on the piano. I talked with him about that, and he told me he got his inspiration for the chordal phrasings from his brother who happens to be a pianist.

Thank you Rick! That is great to hear and kind to say! It really is not a 'hard' style, just a specific style that ANYBODY can grasp. After 15 years I still hunt and peck on the keyboard (plus I have dyslexia). My wife tells me that I would be so much more proficient if I took the time to learn to place my hands correctly and use the correct fingerings etc. I still resist. LOL. This technique is exactly the same. Still plugging away with all of my learning tools. After months of gigging/recording (which refines what we have learned so far) I am back to daily study again and expand. Its exciting.

Doyle Dykes. Exciting player! I saw him play at the NAMM show years ago at the Taylor booth. Smokin! Thanks again. Cheers.
