Hello All,
After reading comments and reviews on the Steinberg Multiclient ASIO Wrapper, I decided to download and install it. It works like a charm, both BIAB and RealBand work perfectly well sharing the driver. Here is my question,---I have cause to move tracks from Realband to Sonar at some point. Sonar does not list the Multiclient Wrapper in the driver options,---is that a trait of the program or is the Steinberg Wrapper limited to running only 2 clients? How would I integrate Sonar into my workflow, which is BIAB to RealBand to Sonar. The problem is that when BIAB and RealBand are open with the Wrapper, I get a driver error message when I try to open Sonar. Any help or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Chuck, not sure that I am the most knowledgeable about this topic, and I assume others will chime in. But here's what I do. Keep in mind, I'm using midi only with multiple hardware, software synths, and Sonar X1d. I'm not sure if this is similar to your setup.

I'm using a MOTU multiclient ASIO driver in all (BIAB, RB and Sonar), which I assume is the Steinberg wrapper, I can run BIAB, RB and Sonar all at the same time...with each playing a different song. When I do want to move tracks, I click on the "plug in mode" button in RB, this puts RB in the drag and drop mode. I then highlight the RB track by clicking on the track number and holding the shift key and dragging it to the appropriate Sonar track.

I've had some issues with getting the tracks to line up exactly where I want them and get frustrated at times that I cannot move multiple tracks at the same time to avoid this. Still it does work.

Mountainside,
Thank you for the reply. What you are doing is exactly what I am trying to do. How did you get Sonar set up in the Steinberg Wrapper? When you go into driver setup in Sonar, is the ASIO Multiclient Wrapper lister as an option? On my setup, it is listed in BIAB and RB but not in Sonar. My only option in Sonar is my Line 6 UX2, which is my interface (I am also recording live instrument and vocal tracks). But let me ask you, when you have all 3 programs open and you click the ASIO Multiclient icon on your taskbar, are all 3 clients listed in the information box?

No I'm not using the actual Steinberg multiclient ASIO wrapper, I'm using one from MOTU. ("Mark of the Unicorn" 828 Mark 3 audio interface). I'm thinking that its just a rebundled version of the Steinberg wrapper...then again maybe MOTU has a whole different approach...not really sure about how the licensing with Steinberg works.

Nevertheless, all that I see in BIAB, RB and Sonar is the MOTU ASIO driver. While MOTU says that multiclient capabilities of their driver is "an unsupported function", many users on various forums have confirmed that they can use multiple apps with the same audio interface. It works fine for me.

Additionally, I understand that some ECHO, RME and NI drivers are also multiclient as well as some others. It seems that today multiclient support is more of a manufacturer's decision regarding development of their drivers more so than a technological capability.

It might be of some help to you to take a look at the following link: http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109826&page=2 . Take a look at the bottom where LOTUZ posts some pictures of his setup in Cubase...might be a clue there.

I do know of others who use MidiOX to accomplish this: http://www.midiox.com/ . However, I am unsure if it works with Win 7.

By the way, you never mentioned what type of audio card or audio interface you are using. Also what version of Windows are you running.

Jeff

I think it's OK to tell this.
About 4 Beta generations ago PG was going to incorporate the Multiclient ASIO wrapper however in testing it didn't work so well with BIAB & RB so was dropped. With more powerful computers that have come along in the last few years it may be worth another try.

One of the problems, if I remember correctly, was that for some laptops, the headphone output and the speakers output are broken out separately when using ASIO (whereas the MME driver treats it as one, and merely mutes speakers when headphones are plugged in). The Steinberg Multi-ASIO driver would latch onto only the first one, and not allow you to select the other (can't remember now if it latched onto speakers or headphones).

It seems there were some other problems, that that one I clearly remember. Maybe they've updated it and I'll give it another try now.
