Thinking about getting one and wondered if someone here has one? Just looking for a portable device with either 3g or 4g connectivity. Thanks for any advice on one.

Actually thinking about purchasing one also, for use at solo gigs to play back mp3 backing tracks. Would also like to hear from anyone using one for similar purposes.

What are you looking to spend? Reason I ask is that until android OS starts behaving like iOS where there are core midi and audio functions, any android device is still going to get it's behind kicked for true musical usefulness when compared to Apple iOS devices. The fact that they built low latency audio into the heart of the OS, is one reason all the cool music apps live on Apple iOS, but nearly nothing exists for Android - at least from an 'instrument' standpoint. Garageband for 5$ on iOS is truly an amazing product - even if you couldn't record on it, the keyboards are worth the 5$ alone.

My decision has been made - next tablet device I buy will be an iPad; even older ones work fine for music apps.

BTW, here is a song that I did entirely in Garageband on my iPhone. In a way it has some BIAB-ness to it; with autogeneration of the piano and string parts given information. Composed and recorded one night in February. On a dinky little phone screen, with a 5$ program! http://fawm.org/songs/8320/ No effort has been made to correct fat-fingered notes on the lead.

Nexus 7 is an OK tablet. I'm using it too send this.but not fr music.
I have tried it for gigging - sadly useless. Battery life is very poor when you start to really use that super charged chip.and recharge time is ridiculous!!!
Almost no decent apps for what we would want.
Sorry I bought it really but an iPad was just too expensive.
I may be happier I BIAB ever find a way of making a mini-BIAB for it.Don't mention current app! Only works if my PC is still on at home. As if i'm going to leave it switched on when we're away on holiday. Uselessapp IMO.
Cheers
Ian

Scott,

I love the electro goodness and that fat lead in "Murals of Lake Placid." I don't care what the limitations of a given system are. Some of my best stuff has been created on PCs with serious problems, or a perfectly working Pentium 3 with MIDI only and a $15 sound card when my big DAW was down. Sometimes working within an imposed structure brings out the best.

Sorry, nothing to offer the OP except that I'd have to agree that the Android OS probably isn't the way to go for music. Apple is where they are in the market for a reason.

R.

Understood - just be advised that for what probably amounts to little extra investment, you CAN have a very musically useful investment.

I've had a Nexus 10 32gb for a week or so. I previously had a 6" Kindle Fire. The N10 cost $500. There were no "deals" that I could find. I bought it mainly to replace our netbook which is now used exclusively for our gigs. The tablet is for email, photos, games, etc.. I'm currently getting it set up to stream movies, youtubes, etc.. to the hdtv. I did't buy it for music and don't even have any music on it. I like using the larger screen as compared to the Kindle Fire. I text my grand daughter now and I didn't before due to those itty bitty keyboards. One thing I really like about it is that everything I needed just auto sync'd over from my desktop. That included Google gmail, calendar, voice, maps, etc..including contacts and bookmarks. I got sold on a tablet over a year ago while on a cruise when I got to see an ipad in action. Note that the nexus does not have 3g or 4G. It's only wifi. I don't really prefer Apple over Droid or vice versa. We don't have ipads or iphones and never have. I was able to get the app's that I had on my Kindle Fire from Amazon. We still use our Kindle ereaders which we've had for a few years.

At this price, I would go for a used iPad 2.

My son has a Galaxy Note II, which he likes very much. Sounds like something you might want to look into. Later, Ray

Wouldn't want or need it for the music apps. Will stick with the pc for that sort of application. Just want something that will play back mp3 backing tracks at a gig and display lyrics at the same time. Can do this now with a netbook, but always exploring options and backups. Sounds like it didn't work out so good for Ian.

Our ASUS netbook (365gb) has worked out well for us. Cost $275 at Best Buy when we got it a couple of years ago. We are using AIMP3 (free) for playing our backups.
