I was recently reading a book by a famous conductor and composer. He stated there there are only 'a dozen of so chord progressions that are in popular use, in both classical and popular music.

He gave one as being the circle of fifths, which was thrashed widely in the Baroque era.

Another one is the I IV V, I guess (inc the blues here).

I suppose the II V I comes in here or maybe we should call that the 1 VI II V, I

Then there are of course minor progressions, more difficult to categorise in my view.

that makes four categories for me.


I wonder what the others were? Maybe others can think of some?
