The advantage to type 0 files is that a number of keyboards and other MIDI hardware devices only accept type 0 files. If you try to play a type 1 through your keyboard, it doesn't know what to do with it.

Most software doesn't have a problem using type 1 files, so I often save files with a (0) or (1) in the file name to indicate the type (zero for my keyboard, type one for my DAW).
