(In My) Solitude is a 1934 jazz standard, composed by Duke Ellington, with lyrics by Eddie DeLange and Irving Mills. RealTracks artists Mike LeDonne (Hammond B3) and Craig Scott (jazz brushes) back up the featured RT artist: P.J. Perry (tenor sax). Aleck Rand does the vocal and plays guitar. Allow a brief digression to discuss two kinds of improvisers. The first type you might call an ALGORTHIMIC player, who blows scales/modes/upper structures/etc. in formulaic succession. In the worst cases, you can begin this player's solo at any point x and it sounds like what you'll hear if you begin instead at point y. The second type I call the MELODISTS. A melodist plays solos that you can sing. In other words, at their best, these players improvise beautifully shaped melodic ideas that illuminate the chord changes, sometimes with unexpected insights. Pat Metheny says that he learned to sing every one of Wes Montgomery's solos on one of Wes's most famous albums (Live at the Half-Note (1965); Metheny calls it the greatest live recording in jazz guitar history and I agree with him). Thank you Peter and Guenter. It is very gratifying to get favorable comments that mean something. If I have to be the sole representative of straight-ahead, in-the-pocket Jazz on the Forum, then so be it.
Peter, please (in italics) don't stop adding more Jazz real tracks. Jazz may have been exported to Canada, Holland, etc. but it seems quite alive in the custody of American universities. BIAB/RealBand is an unsurpassed teaching tool for fledgling improvisors and arrangers.
