It's time to leave the legacy days of DOS behind, surely! It's been nearly twenty years since this restriction was removed from Microsoft's O/S. And there's a limit to how many 8 letter acronyms that can be used and still provide an intelligent / interpretable name.

Yes, I know that many have explained all the reasons why. But if my company still wrote code that forced users to use 8.3 we would expect to receive suggestions like Russ has offered. Lots of them, and more critical too.

If users want to keep their old version running, they can stay with 8.3. If users want to pay to upgrade they should have the choice of using a naming convention that conforms to the O/S environment that they are using.

Has there been a study done of just how many users would be affected if 8.3 was dropped?
