I'm thinking of a place dedicated to musical terminology and definitions for some of us seat-of-the-pants musicians with little or no formal training. You friends talk way over my head and I don't want to keep appearing stupid.
Perhaps the poster who first introduces an esoteric musical term could give a loose definition, in layperson's terms, to be built upon by others wiki style.
It could easily be extended to BIAB/RB questions not found elsewhere.
I have asked one with no response: What does "soloing outside" mean? Questions like that.
Opinions please?

It could easily be extended to BIAB/RB questions not found elsewhere. There's already a BiaB wiki. I've been trying to get people to contribute with limited success. It would be easy to create a section for musical terminology as it relates to BiaB. For most terminology all that would be needed is a link to an explanation elsewhere. I'm sure between google and Wikipedia most music terminology is defined somewhere. If you and others want I could add a framework for this idea to the BiaB wiki. Then you'd have a place to add definitions/links. I'd really encourage you to help contribute though. I simply can't maintain it on my own. BTW the link is in my signature below.

Sometimes I've found that it's faster to do stuff the old way. For example, I have "An Idiot's Guide to Musical Theory" and "Ukulele For Dummies." I can find 98% of what I need in these books and faster than the time it takes me to find something using Google. I think that I get frustrated trying to jump around to a bunch of different places to find an answer to something. What would be a big help to me is to have everything in one place. Not sure what soloing outside means unless it refers to playing outside to hear how different it is from playing in an enclosed room. I would think it would apply also to playing in a large venue such as an auditorium? Just guessing here. A lot of non-musician folks don't know what woodshedding means either. Just my 4 cents worth. . Stan

Thanks, Stan.
"Soloing outside" is a legitimate option under SOLOIST. I THINK it has something to do with where BIAB "places" the soloist in the mix. Not sure, thus the question.
The soloist feature in version 2013 is a marvel of programming. I love it! It also has a "medley" option (on selected soloists only) where several instruments will trade 4s. Very realistic.

That's not what I think of for "soloing outside". I think of selecting notes that primarily are not tones in the chord, or are at least very high extensions (11ths, 13ths).
One way this can be done is to think of another scale or mode to play over, instead of the one in use in the song.
There's much more to it, of course.
BUT - I don't use the BIAB Soloist so I could be completely wrong about what they mean by this.

I agree with Matt, but then I have never seen this term in any musical context other than BiaB.

Ornette Colman saxman would say..."say what?" Dizz would say..."huh?" Kenton would say..."hrrrummph!" Theolonius Monk would say..."dig this..."! G-Daddy would say..."Potato Solid!!" Johnny Smith, ex NYC NBC Staff guitarist...for both jazz and classical spproaches to the airwaves...
He was outside the box before guitarists ever heard of the term! I recall catching a particulaar Johnny Smith Guitarist Gig at the Bee-Hive Jazz Club in Chicago (Circa 1955)...when the line-up of Guitar Pickers along the bar waited with baited breath for this guy who soared the charts playing Moonlight in Vermont, along with another "out of the box guy", Stan Getz!!
(Most of them guitarists in attendance, were either radio staff musicians (No TV in those days)...or local geetar first-call "cats", and they positioned themselves...beers and smiles were widely evident...and with this serene yet quizzical type of anticipation waited for him to "explode all over the fretboard!
be they augmented runs or diminished cryp-o-tonic chord-melody stuff....... 12ths, 13ths, or whatever the Penta-Perfectos !?!
"Out of Sight" ...AND....OUT OF THE BOX!
Of course, Johnny Smith was originally a trumpet player like you, my man!!

Gdaddy, Johnny Smith is one of my guitar heroes! I just loved his playing. Not only is “Moonlight in Vermont” one of my favorites but Johnny Smith plays Jimmy Van Heusen is another. Both are super albums.
PS – Tony Mattola ain’t to shabby either!
Back in my day the only time we started panic buying was when the bartender shouted "last call"!

Thing about Johnny was he was an exceptional classical guitarist who played very hard "charts" as soloist with the New York Philharmonic.
He got his chops in the U.S. Army Band as a Trumpet cat. Might he had given Miles Davis, Ferguson and his big-band trumpet section, etc., a run for their money with his own Harmon Muted approach...if he hadn't just picked up (on the side?), his guitar playing.
Truly a fabulous guy...he came right to me, at the end of this very long Bee-Hive-Bar...and asked me to "take care" of "wifey" Numero Duo, while he entertained (more like flabbergasted the crowded scene.
