I have a slightly different take on this topic:
There are some songs that have such a personal meaning, I can't make it through them. Guess what, they are not on the list of 'public performance' songs. Period.
Some I have been able to convert over to sharing with the public, record them, share them here, etc.
But some stay right here. Not too many, but some. I'm with Scott on this one. IMO, very few people can gracefully pull off the "tearful ballad", no matter how sincere it may be. It comes across as contrived and cheesy. Better to just put that song on the back burner until it can be delivered with emotions under control
