I always normalize all of our backing tracks to -3dB. Otherwise, the track volumes will vary too much from track to track. You don't want to be adjusting your track volumes while performing.That is not foolproof, though. Some tracks are just more dynamic than others, so you will have to use your ears to tame the louder ones.

Also a good idea to audition the tracks through whatever PA/amp you will be using live. They're going to sound vastly different than through monitors or phones.
