That Which Might Have Been

©2013 Robert Randall Burke

You asked if I could save you
I said I'd surely try
Turned out to be a mountain
Too high to climb
Your questions had no answers
None that I could find
Your lines, they had no meter
The words, no rhyme.

It's your own short story
You've got to write the end
You might call it
“That Which Might Have Been”.

The maples are all turning
Soon the snow will fall
And you won't hear my footsteps
Coming down the hall
A blank page lies before you
You take your pen in hand
And try to write an ending
You can understand.

It's your own short story
You've got to write the end
You might call it
“That Which Might Have Been”.

I hope you'll think about me
Every now and then
When you think about
That which might have been.

You asked if I could save you
I said I'd surely try.

Bob, this is remarkably good.

I can think of no way in which this could be improved.

Apart from being such a good song, it shows just how versatile you are.

So it's not just Eddie who can write sad songs!

What next?

ROG.

Hi Robert,

a very thoughtful and lovely song.
I like the vocals and the arrangement.
Totally different from your Mars thing.
You wear many hats.

Bob,

Now, THAT is songwriting. Period. Top to Bottom. I would guess this only took one try.

It's your own short story
You've got to write the end
You might call it
“That Which Might Have Been”.

This may be one of THE best written choruses I've ever heard.

The overall feeling of the song is one I get from very few. The best of the best. "Walkaway Joe". "The Dance".

Who the @*#@*# are you?

........
Okay.... other stuff...
Your vocal is perfect. You are a cool singer.
The strings are perfect.
The piano... seems "thin". The playing is what it should be, but the RT is lacking a depth that they normally have. Did you do anything to it? What is that?

ROG and Guenter,

Thanks for the kind remarks.

Floyd,

I appreciate the nice words. You're right about the piano. I had to thin it out in the low mids to give the strings some room. I love that solo piano, but it is really heavy on the bottom end, and I wanted the string section to have some oomph.

Bob

really nice. I have played around with the solo piano tracks but have not used them to create anything.... it's good to hear what they can do.

Hi Bob,

You've certainly set the bar high with this one. It's so-o-o-o-o good! Everything about it fits perfectly to create a very professional work in all aspects.

Noel

Wow, Bob! The lyrics and melody are "meaty", something you can sink your heart into. I imagined Elton on keys. Nice choice of RTs.

Overall; good on ya, my friend.

Great chorus! And "You take your pen in hand..." gives almost a 19th century feel - or that's my image and I'm sticking with it. I've read many letters from that period where the writer would preface his/her comments with "I take my pen in hand." Superb in all aspects.

Thanks for the kind words Don.

Janice & Bud - Thanks. I'm a big fan of the 19th Century myself. I suppose the modern version would be: "I take my iPad in hand..."
