I've only started having these so much since November and the near-death experience followed by a month in hospital.
Seems like certain connections in the brain got rewired or something.
Haven't mailed in my pilot's license yet, but no need to with this economy I ain't flyin' anyway...
what were we talking about?

Mac:
Sorry to make a bad (awkward) joke about the Mad Dogs tour.
Look at it this way -- you still have way more synapses than most anyone on this board, AND, the best exercise for any brain, old or new, is still MUSIC.
Be well, Brad

I didn't take what you posted that way at all, Brad.
Matter of fact, I thought about it... (grin)

Oh no. Was I a Major? Did the bastards promote me? Where's the pay stub? Seriously, the other night on a gig, a fellow requested "Fly Me to the Moon". The guitar player, bass player and drummer were ready to start playing that song. And I lit off into an improvised intro to "How High the Moon". Problem is that when something like that happens, my memory association disconnects have no clue as to the problem, none whatsoever. So we ended up playing "How High the Fly Me to the Moon". Quite an abrupt keychange there, just go to the five of the target key with the LH and go. At least I still seem to be able remember those things. *If you want to get a good idea about waterboarding and whether or not it is torture, wet a handkerchief and place it over your face while listening to us!* --Mac

Kinda an overnight success, eh? I think the audience was fooled by a female singer, who unlike many who highlight their physical attributes, came out in modest dress. She didn't even dance and shake. Don S.

To add one further thing to this meandering "river" thread -- at the risk of causing it to overflow its banks...
I just received the current issue of "Keyboard" Magazine, and Andy LaVerne has a useful little piece on the use of what he calls the "Cry Me a River" riff. Based on the first six notes of the tune, and well-used by many since Bill Evans in the fifties, Andy shows how adaptable this little figure can be over a wide variety of jazz chords.

Don, I highly recommend the Mad Dogs and Englishmen album.

One of the greatest live albums of all time.
And, as Mac said, Leon Russell (2 s's and 2 l's) on (Les Paul) guitar.

While I don't expect to have a Susan Boyle moment in sharing some songs on the net, I do appreciate any comments and support for some initial postings... Check out a few songs I arranged with BIAB and posted, and tell me what you think. They're at http://www.myspace.com/drdubosehalflivejazz. Thanks. Let me know you could get to them, and could hear them, and that when you did hear them, they made you pop. OK?

Yeah, I remember Julie London - her version made the "Hit Parade" as it was called then, and I seem to recall that it was featured in a movie she starred in - "The Girl Can't Help It"). I was old enough to be paying attention (15) to "older women". It's a nice bluesey number on the piano. The trick is to not rush it.
She was a real good looker too (OK, I know I'm an anachronism for using this term).

The guitar tab for the song: (I'm still in the process of checking some of the chord notations as there may be better substitutions in a few places. The tab is faithful to Kessel's playing.)

Thanks. I appreciate your input.I did catch a YouTube of "Cry Me a River," by Cocker and the Mad Dogs and what can I say? A lot of talent there, but a little overcooked for my taste? I guess I prefer Ms. London's lazy melodic rendition.
Kinda hard for an old dog to change his ways.

Yup, Mac, thanks. I've seen that clip. Hilarious. There is also one with Pearl Jam that is priceless.
We're getting way off-topic here but just for historical accuracy - that was The Grease Band backing up Cocker at Woodstock, not Mad Dogs and Englishmen.
MD&E were a group of "all-star" musicians a year later including Leon Russell, Carl Radle and Bobby Keys that formed just for that tour.
