Sorry folks, on the advice of a good m8 in the biz, I am removing these from public view. He reckons it is too dangerous to post publicly without a writing deal somewhere.
Sincere apologies. These ARE my songs, but this guy really knows his stuff.

To restate:

I told him that they were not at any sort of pro level, but he maintained that was not the point.
As I said he really knows his stuff, and I tend to follow his advice no matter how silly I think it is.
Again my apologies for having to remove the original tunes...I stress they ARE my original work and the removal is not because of anything other than the above.

Please could you explain a bit more m8, maybe using the "off topic" forum.....I, for one, would LOVE to know why it is more dangerous to post a song here as compared to Soundcloud /SoundClick accounts etc, since your Soundcloud account is still open, as mine is. Any advice is always welcome Alyn

No not "here" per se. You misunderstand m8 on the internet in general. And after all nothing is actually posted to PG Forums only weblinks, so it is saying nothing about this place at all And it is only original work that I was advised to remove. I also have several cover "interpretations" still on SC, hence it is still open. Dennis

Hey Josie, I don't mind giving a precis...It won't start a discussion as I really don't think anyone really cares one way or the other. Essentially he said that it was way to difficult to protect copyright without much in the way of corporate support (read some sort of publishing tie-in), and that plagiarism is quite rife in certain parts of the industry. Not so much in stealing total songs, but pinching notable hook lines of lyrics and melodies. And of course once someone else has recorded/published/released "your" hook, well it is pretty damn difficult to then use it yourself, if you are sans publishing/recording contracts. As I tried to explain to him my songs are nowhere near that level, and that bands put stuff up all the time. But he said it doesn't matter, if you come up with a good idea these days you really have to do your best to protect it. And in any case those bands/artists usually have a pretty good legal team behind them. I thought he was pulling my leg at first, but he seemed serious enough. He did listen to the tunes and thought they were nothing too remarkable, good, but not special - but even so, to play it careful. Which is why I pulled them down. TBH, I am really having my doubts on this one. He is usually spot on (even if I disagree at first - history usually proves him correct on other tips) but hmmm, well I don't know. I mean THOUSANDS post songs every hour and you don't read about any issues arising from that. Being as it is the first time I have posted original work (done lots of covers) it did sort of resonate. Perhaps I over-reacted? I don't really know. So there you have it Dennis

Hi Dennis, The link below contains the main facts that drive copyright in the US. I'd imagine that this is not so different in most countries (it certainly isn't in Australia). http://www.tunecore.com/guides/sixrightsAs I understand copyright, when one posts an original song on Soundcloud, Youtube, etc., it is considered "published" and the act posting estabilishes the poster as the owner. As added protection, when I have a collection of 6 to 10 new songs, I register them online with the US Copyright Office as a collection. This is the cheap way of doing things. A collection of songs (up to 10, I think) costs around $35. http://www.copyright.gov/The Copyright Office issues a receipt and catalogue number when the fee is paid. This is legal proof of that the song belongs to you. If anyone should infringe your copyright then the Copyright Office's registration is able to be used in a court of law to clearly establish your ownership. Once you have that number, you can post freely. (I also register the song with my local PRO.) On the downside, once a song is published, anyone is free to use that song, without permission, provided they pay the necessary royalities. If a song is unpublished and has never been performed in public, on the other hand, the songwriter has complete control over who first gets to record or perform the song. After that first recording or performance, the song is considered published and the writer no longer has a say in who can or cannot use it. I've been where you're presently at in relation to copyright. My view these days is that "you've gotta be in it to win it". I know that if my songs are left sitting here on my computer, NOTHING will happen to them. That's guaranteed! By posting them around on multiple sites, maybe someone will stumble across one of them and like it enough to do something with it. I make sure that I'm easily found should that ever happen. For what it's worth, I once had a song picked up by a publisher who was searching American Song Space for new material. Hope these thoughts give you some added insight. All the best, Noel P.S. Keep in mind that none of what I said will stop someone from stealing some or all of a song. It gives some protection. The world is a big place, though, and I might never know if someone in Iceland has passed off a song of mine as their own! I'm prepared to take that risk.

I did not know about being ale to register like that with the US CR office. I will do that and then repost I think. I will also pass this on to "certain" people. What did you mean by local PRO? Hi Dennis,
Here in Australia, the company that manages paying of royalties is APRA. They are our performing rights organisation (PRO) and are equivalent to BMI, APRA, SESAC in the US.
APRA has affiliations with other PROs around the world. So, if someone picks up one of my songs and (say) royalties get paid to BMI, sooner or later, I should get whatever share of those royalties I'm entitled to.

Ha, ha -- there is no copyright protection anymore.
Look, if you don't post your songs how are you going to get anyone to know about you? If you are the artist, post away. If you are a writer looking for a "publishing deal", I think those days are long gone. You either have to be the artist or write with the artist.
Your "M8" might have know his stuff but ....

Ahh, APRA now them I have heard of, of course. It was the PRO that threw me, but now I understand the context of the acronym. Thanks Noel @ Kemmrich yes that is very true. As I wrote earlier I will establish some stronger protection (using th methods above) and then repost them. I really don't know why I jumped like I did, I mean it's not like they were super duper or anything..but still when one creates something, and as the world is full of unscrupulous people, I suppose it is a natural concern to want to protect that creation, no matter how bad!! I just wanted to write an epilogue to this tale. After reading the link Noel so kindly provided on the Six Exclusive Copyrights accorded to an original work, I don't think I have too much to worry about. I did copy the link to my friend and he said that he already knew that, and that very similar legislation exists in Australia. However he added that it did not stop many people from pinching ideas, and that it was very difficult and expensive to prove your case against a pirate in these circumstances. He added that notwithstanding this, these days unless such theft leads to a MAJOR international hit, it is nearly impossible to even police, let alone prosecute. Bottom line is he still recommended to not publicly post too much without some form of corporate support (read : writing/publishing deal, no matter HOW small or low paying) , but if I wanted to go ahead, then it was a risk on my own head. I do feel more confident about posting now though, so I think I will re-upload to my SC account. As I mentioned before these tunes are nothing special, but who knows one day when the MOJO is right, I MIGHT just come up with something memorable.
