The chances of someone stealing your song and making money from it are about as remote as your selling your song and making money from it.
There are thousands of pros not making money. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Agreed 90dB, but I do wonder just how many of the thousands of "pros" not getting any money HAVE had parts of songs nicked? How many of the classic hooks we hear in songs and love, were in reality a part of some poor struggling musos one decent "lifetime" tune? Not copying whole songs, just the "hook" parts... as we all know it is the hooks that sell songs...unless one is a Bob Dylan et al  Just sayin'  Dennis

What he didn't “adapt”, he stole outright. What sells songs today is image. With respect to anybody's concern about 'being compromised' online, I have a different reality and feel as a career musician. Unfortunately I feel the OP was led astray and to be overly cautious to the point of diminished returns. I personally don't find it to be sound advice as it is too incomplete. Protection is always wise, but there is a reality to new real-time reality to that.
When I want to 'protect' my songs today, I post them online and leave them. I have 2 places for this.
This is what is called 'publishing'. Self publishing and online publishing, but published nonetheless.
This creates a date/time stamp that is easily verified by the 2 hosts. Youtube is the best for this IMO even though I don't use it.
If I found someone 'stealing' my tune or a vital 'hook' well I have a course of action. I also have my tunes copy written the old fashioned way. But in the end, online publishing is the fastest and most secure outside of a known single or major artist.
If you don't post online now, where do you showcase your material?
Of course all of our work is subject to plagiarism today. One irony here anyway is that few on this board aren't using BIAB for the majority of their tracks (ie; not your work anyway)and second, few artist ANYWHERE are doing something so off the beaten path that it would not be some type of plagiarism. And if that were the case, those artists wouldn't be listened too much anyway. What isn't plagiarized? If you want your song to be liked, it better be familiar to some part of our culture. At the least it is familiar to you.
Want to protect your work? Post it online, release a disc, copyright it. Still won't be safe. Ever.
I hope you can enjoy the art more and the fear less. It really isn't such a cut throat business as it is far more transparent than before. Heres a challenge: Try to even GIVE one of your songs away to somebody who can use it for profit. Try. It is a lot harder than you may imagine.

I agree image is a huge part these days. But I was not intending this to be confrontationalist in any way and your posts do seem to be argumentative and appear to be dismissive of genuine concerns as laughable as you may find them.

@ Texashearts rush, yes that is exactly it, I think the advice I got was meant with good intentions, but was a little "underdone" shall we say  You make very good points, as Noel did, and these have helped me conclude Ihave not much to worry about I agree that in some way shape or form, we ALL borrow tags and cliches , not deliberately but it does happen. I don’t know about your country but here in the USA you can copyright any number of songs with a MP3 CD and $35; check out our governments copyright web page. This is one way to cost effectively officially register a song with the government. There will be no question who did the song first as the first registration of copyright is what lawyers go by, at least that is what I have been told.
The only issue with this verses copyrighting one song at a time is that if someone wants a song from the CD they will get all of the songs on the CD for the agreed upon price. If you copyright each song individually then they only get that one song. But the copyright cost is $35 for each individual song.
Just my two cents.

IMHO the idea that there are pros scouring forums like this looking for material to steal is mostly fantasy.
I've been reading songwriting forums for many years have never once heard of anyone claiming this actually happened to them.

In my country, m8 = "mate" and is equivalent to "buddy".
Noel I was aware of the term mate in both your countries I just was not up on the shorthand. FWIW, mate in my country is a term for one's wife, of course another term for wife I heard from an old blues musician back years ago was shack-bully. Thanks Later,

In the event that anyone steals your song, it's probably a good idea to just wave it goodbye.
One of my friends is a lawyer specializing in international copyright. He makes ten times as much as I do as a musician. Says it all really...
