Some of the midi files I've bought have nice swells in the sustained brass section notes.
I can't seemed to get that effect in the midi files or tracks that I make. In looking at the bought files in events editor I see controller 11 is doing the swells. I've tried going to piano roll edit and selecting controller 11 then using the graphic function to draw in the "swell". It shows up in the graphic window but does not show up in the sound when played back.
Next I plugged my expression pedal onto the midi controller keyboard (yamaha tyros2) and tried to achieve the effect in real time. But that didn't do it either. Actually, I have the same issue when I'm trying to increase or decrease the volume of a long sounding note or chord. Any help?
Thanks,
DVJ

Are you on the right MIDI channel for the track you want to effect?

Do you have room to raise the volume (IE are they at 100% already?)

Also check preferences to see if realtime controllers are enabled

Yes you can use CC11 Expression to achieve the result for which you are looking. Essentially, as Rharv indicates above you need to reduce the start of the up swell from a sound level lower than the held note on which you are working. EXAMPLE: Note Velocity 120 should be reduced to say 85 by CC11 timed just before the Note is attacked. Then draw the graph upwards to the Note Velocity of 120. For down swells, do the reverse. It is a good idea to enter CC11 value 127 after each series of Expressions so as not to affect the velocity values of succeeding notes.

There may be another reason why you feel that the Synth you are using does not recognise CC11 codes. For some synths/samplers, it is necessary to set up the Synth specifically to recognise these codes. EXAMPLES: SampleTank, Sonic Synth, VSampler and certain Orchestral Sound Banks.

To Test, Enter CC11 value Zero followed 4/5 bars later by CC11 value 127 in a Midi track. The sound should be turned off by the first instance of CC11 and turned on by the second. If this happens, then you are using a compliant synth.

I hope this helps

Sorry that my above Post was submitted twice - the system refused to allow me to remove the second Post although I attempted to do so within one minute of the error.

Many thanks for the info. It has taken some time to utilize it and get back to the topic. I've had some success but have now run into another related problem. I have a few measures in a couple of tracks where I need to remove the controller 11 data. The only way I've found to do this is in the event editor where I must delete it event by event. Doing such is taking forever. Is there some way to remove a string of those events without disturbing the note or other data?

Edit - Cut (pay attention here) - Use Data Filter check box enabled

If you enable the Data Filter you can decide exactly what kind of event you want to edit. Uncheck everything but Controller events and limit the span to CC11.

The Data Filter, and other optional check boxes, are very powerful in multiple Edit commands. You have to keep your eyes open for them though.
