The laptop is now the equal of the desktop in most ways. That is, if you pick the *right* laptop configuration for the task...

Some portable computers (NOT laptops, you'll scorch trou if you try it) are designated as 'desktop replacements'. They are heavier than true laptops and have no battery life to speak of, but sport full Pentium or equivalent processors, not so-called 'mobile' CPUs, and have high-speed drives and specs to match the latest beige boxes.

Well I can still see a nice rack with:
1. A High end computer
2. Delta 1010
3. Lexicon Reverb
4. DBX Compressor
5. Rane EQ
6. Allen & Heath mixer
7. Hardware synth of your choice
8. Transducers of your choice.

Well, folks

This is what I have gone for and its shipping to me now:

HP EliteBook Mobile Workstation 8730w - Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 / 2.8GHz - Centrino 2 - vPro - 4GB RAM - 320GB HD - DVD±RW (+R DL) / DVD-RAM - BT - 802.11 a / b / g / n (draft) - TPM - FPR - Windows XP Professional - 17" WUXGA TFT (TopValue) (HP Promotions*)

I have also ordered a dedicated USB HDD to make a full backup (I was running rapidly out of space). The one I chose was this:

Iomega Desktop Hard Drive Value Series - External Hi-Speed USB 1TB Hard Drive - 7200 rpm - Buffer: 8MB

So, thanks very much for the input

Sounds like a nice computer. You'll LOVE the 17" monitor.

Sam,
First, if the Iomega is the one I'm thinking of, it's two 500GB hard drives.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...0Value%20Series

Look at the reviews.

Since Iomega uses other manufacturers hard drives, you don't know what you're getting. Review of one of Iomega's backups reveals it uses Samsung 5,400 RPM drives. Anything that's 'Value Series' and only 8MB of RAM for a 500 or 1TB drive is going to be slow. Make sure you turn it off when not in use.

The 320GB hard drive will be nice, you can get another hard drive to replace the modular DVD if you want to have two hard drives installed. Make sure you turn off the Wireless at gigs. With XP, of course, you won't be able to use the full 4GB of RAM, you'll probably have about 3 gigs to play with, but the Dual Core should be nice, if you haven't had one before.

The 17" monitor will stand out on stage, no doubt, but it will be easy to read from. Use it as a Karaoke screen for the audience to sing along.

I'd assume that you're going to keep your USB audio interface? The computer will support the Express Card PCMCIA interface, so if you wanted to get something like an Echo card, it would plug right in, and should be faster than USB.

I hope it all works out for you. I'm also glad you have a 'patron' and someone who believes in you.

Good luck!

Gary
