While I'm not a theory guy either.... it is the "rules of the road" so to speak.

Knowing theory will never hurt you nor will it be a detriment to you.

Not knowing it can be....

I know some people who play piano at a church I used to attend. I asked them to play a 1-4-5 in the key of G and they had no clue. Had they known the least little bit of theory, they would have instantly known what I was saying. They could set down to a piece of sheet music and play it like reading a book..... but they really did not understand the music theory behind anything they played.
