The manner Mac noted (and you have posted drawings of) would work.
Simply cut the track volume and the effect is non-existent.
Some FX can 'learn' commands too.

Lots of ways to get things done.
I posted my solution (copy only what's needed to another track and effect that track, then adjust original as needed).
Since it's a separate track and visually apparent, it makes it easy to spot the track in the Tracks window ('ah, that part happens right there on that track') when trying to mix.
