It took me a while to come around on this one, because I generally don't care for recitations. This one is well done, however; Don's acting lessons helped.

This is the first Everly Brothers recording that has a backing chorus (the Anita Kerr Singers) though many of their prior recordings seemed chorus backed because they were so smooth. The effect is eerie, and the Everlys' harmonies are perfection.

Once I got the Warners UK CD, "Ebony Eyes" became one of my favorite EB recordings.

The attention to detail is amazing. Near the end of Don's recitation, after "the beacon light from the control tower as it whipped through ...", Buddy Harmon's drums become rolling thunder. This isn't so evident on the radio, and with the computer you have to use headphones to hear it.

But on that Warners UK CD, with top speakers, it's pretty dramatic. An aural masterpiece!

(I assume it's compressed and rolled off bass drum or tom.)

I love "Ebony Eyes"!!!

BTW, this recording is crystal clear on the Warners UK CD, stunningly so.

Nothing like I heard when I clicked on the link.
