While there is no formula for how music is created here is, in my very humble breakdown, the way it should happen: Your right-brain gets an impulse to express something (magic happens here) Your left-brain maps a series of aural textures and frequency intervals that it knows will lead to the expression of that impulse (discipline happens here) Your nervous system sends signal to your hands to drag the mouse, hit the MIDI keyboard, pluck the string, drag the bow, etc. (major expenditure at Guitar Center happens here) part 1 -part-2 part-3 -part-4 part 5

This is good stuff. Thank you. Unlike many on this forum, I have not had a lot of formal music education. Most of what I know, I learned by ear. Well, posts like this are real gems to me, because it brings things to light, that many may know, but few share. Much food for thought. Like one line from part three, "The fact is you can have a big bad ass chord progression with zero harmonic movement, you’re just fiddling with voicings (again, I’m assuming you read Part 2). It’s amazing how easily you can spend half a lifetime in voicings and miss the big harmonic picture." It reminds me of the time Mac sent me two chord turnarounds that I was looking for, with two different harmonic movements, that really made one of my songs come alive.
I have really learned so much from this forum, I can't even thank everyone enough. I print everything important, so I have my own reference book now.

glad you are finding it useful like you i do not have formal music training and certainly am not suggesting by these types of posts that it is not desired or valuable mac and the others who have the training and willing share their knowledge are a great resource but i suffer from IGS (instant gradafication syndrome) and well....... posts like the one here and in the lessons category of my blog lessons sometimes help
