I have been playing with repeats (not first and second endings)

I created a 32 bar chorus which repeated 3 times. The problems I came up are:

1) having fakebook unchcked I entered in 4 measures of chords, set a repeat (example: I then set repeat from bar 1 \ 4 measures and set the repeat amount to 4.) This made the repeat just fine but I found

out that once I made the repeat, I couldn't edit the repeat ie say change the amount of repeats to 3 instead of 4. The only

way to do it was to delete all repeats.

2) ok now I have my first repeat in and I want to make a second repeat so I enter in chords for 2 measures starting at measure 17 and set the next repeat to start at measure 17 \ 2 measures and set the repeat amount to 6. Then I set in the last 4 m3easures manually, and generate the song. My first repeat goes off well but my second repeat is all messed up.

3) I have a third scenario of wierdness. if I make a new song set up the same procedure for the first repeat, then enter in the rest of the chords manually, generate the song works great. then I unfold the song and regenerate. messes things up.

I think they really need to work on this code. I know the workaround is to just make one big chorus

Welcome to the wonderful world of Repeats and Endings.

The first thing to realize is that this is essentialliy a PRINT function. You can add bars from the dialogue, but most users will tell you to create the song in linear form first, and then add the repeat attributes. Since you are not going to use the BIAB repeat function, change the number of repeats to 1, and the number of bars to the total in your song. Pick a number, say 200, and go back and change it when you are finished. These boxes are next to the tempo and key above the notation area.

So take the four measures and copy them 3 more times to get a total of 16 bars. The using the repeat dialogue, make a repeat starting at bar 1, with 4 bars in the repeat, repeating 4 times.
If you want to change to 3 repeats, you must manually delete the last four bars, and the EDIT the repeat dialogue. Just right click on one of the bars, and select Repeats Codas etc. and then click the edit button on the bottom left. The repeat will be highlighted, so click EDIT, and your original repeat will show. Change the number of repeats to 3, and click Make Repeat.

If you want to add an additional repeat later in the song, the process is the same. Create the bars you need to repeat first, then right click on one of those bars, and select Repeats, Codas as before.

However, this time when the dialogue appears, select EDIT LIST. This will highlight your existing repeat, as before, but this time click APPEND to creat a new repeat. Don't forget to click MAKE REPEAT to close the dialogue.

You do this for all of the repeats, endings codas etc.

The key is that BIAB will play what ever you have created in the notation window, starting at bar 1 and continuing to the end. The fake sheet will show the results of the repeats, endings, coda dialogue. Your task is to make sure these are the same. For the most part this is a tedious but workable problem.

Good Luck

In addition, I try to get the song's form finalized before filling in the melody or soloist tracks. If you change the form, BIAB will offer to adjust the melody and soloist tracks to fit. Although you can say yes or no, I often get things mangled whichever I choose. You can move the melody if it winds up in the wrong place toward the end of a song, but this can be challenging when there are repeats or a tag.

I have learned to save often, using slightly different file version names so I can always go back to a version that worked.

Thanks for the info. I'll break that down and try it. Yeah I learned the hard way to save often with versions for each time I make a change..
