Thanks Larry for your comments. I did reinstall the SC driver after checking Roland's website. They've stopped supporting it, the last 64 bit driver was 2009. I uninstalled/and reinstalled it anyway with no change. I also checked the sample rate plus the SC has a USB button right on the front panel, push it and it toggles between no audio and "USB audio".

This is why I'm asking these questions because I also wonder if it could be a physical problem with the SC but, it's been sitting on my desk for about 5 years. It's barely been moved, never gigged for example. Still, somehow the USB connection could have gone bad I suppose. I could go buy a new USB interface and if it works keep it but if it also has noise return it.

As for your comment about the USB cable itself, I certainly have no clue but before I posted here I did a lot of surfing and found several comments from people who seem to know what they're talking about saying the ground wire in a USB cable can indeed cause problems but I don't know that.
