One person here, Porteus420, has a Roland Integra, but that person only posted once, a year ago. I'm hoping someone else here has one and can comment on using it with BIAB.

Specifically, I would like to know how it differs from all the earlier Roland synths such as the Fantom that have to be switched from Patch mode to Performance mode. Doing that makes all the sounds available to BIAB, but each patch is not as good quality as it would be when played alone in Patch mode. I don't see anything about this in the user manual, so I wonder if the sounds might be the "good stuff" with BIAB.

Any comments? Thanks.

Ps I'm still considering what to get to replace my Roland Fantom that was struck by lightning.

Matt, as you know from our PM exchanges, I have both the Roland Fantom XR rack and a Yamaha Motif XS rack. In your search for a replacement for your fried XR, be sure to audition the Motif rack. I find it cleaner, clearer and less muddy than the XR in both patch and multi mode.

Matt,

FWIW, I have a Roland Integra 7. Although I've tried it with BiaB a couple times to see if it works(and it sounds great), my work flow is a little bit different.
For generating a quick backing track, I first find a style in BiaB that works, and export sounds (i.e. Drums, then guitar, etc. ) into wave files. I then import each one into my DAW, Sonar X3d. Next I add additional parts using sounds from the Roland Integra 7, Jupiter 80, and/or BK7.

Since I primarily use this method, I don't use BiaB to control my synths. Not sure what you mean by performance vs patch mode. I just set up the correct MIDI channels for the I7.

My other two methods are to use the BK7 (fastest) and generate each track in Sonar (slowest).

How bad was the Fantom Toasted? Just the Power Supply?

Thanks Wally and Jeff.

I've sent the Roland to the factory repair shop in Los Angeles, since the local Roland dealer couldn't diagnose the problem. I have another Fantom XR which makes it possible for me to isolate that the problem is not in my computer system but is indeed something wrong with the Fantom.

Wally, you have answered my main question about the Integra7 by writing "Not sure what you mean by performance vs patch mode.". I couldn't find mention of this in the user manual either. In all other Roland or Edirol synths I've used, there was a Patch Mode, with great sounds used one at a time with a keyboard, or Performance Mode which allowed polyphony but gave a much more limited rendition of each sound. If the Integra7 does NOT do it that way, this is a good thing!

Yes, my workflow for making a final version of a song is to take it into SONAR and select my MIDI patches there. But as a composer, I really get motivated by hearing great sound "up front" as I write, and would like to use the Integra7 (should I decide to buy one) in BIAB.

I've used the Integra 7/Sonar X3 to generate some big band arrangements. I never had any degradation of the sound or drop outs, even though I was using all 16 MIDI Channels. Didn't exceed the max 128 Poly tones since it's difficult to have a trumpet, trombone, sax, etc. play chords! :-)

Thanks again. I've also done big band and even symphony orchestra charts with the Fantom.

I think it's not usually the number of channels that causes a dropout; it would only be a problem if each of the patches you chose all used four or more voices to produce the tone. My point is that the Fantom "scales back" the resources devoted to each patch in Performance Mode. Apparently, this is not an issue with the Integra, as there are not two modes of operation. Again, I think that's a good thing.
