I don't recall the specific inspiration for this song but I wrote in Feb. 2011 and only performed it a handful of times - guitar/vocal. It was not well received and I tucked it away.
At my son's suggestion I pulled it out to give a BIAB treatment and have made many failed attempts at rewriting it. At last I am weary of working on it at the moment and decided to post it with the original lyrics in tact so that I can move on and maybe revisit it in the future. I have only changed the Title from the original. (from "Seventh Skin")

I've shed my seventh skin, bathed in Mississippi mud
and traded my denim for cowhide
I sleep outside a fallen barn to tease the rattle snakes inside
I've outlived all my sons and my daughters everyone
lost track of every woman that I've loved
I'm fickle now like the wind and I circle from above
I'm older than the trees, and the shade that they provide
talk to them every now and then
when you've seen the things I've seen, it's good to have a friend
...
Burdened by the deaths of those around me
Fallen like a February snow
I turn away now from the things that might be
When you've walked in my shoes then you'll truly know
I've wandered for so long you'd think I'd forgotten everything
yet somehow the memories remain
if you ask me who I am I no longer have a name
So I search now for anything to take a little solace in
but all I have are memories like ghosts
and when I finally die will heaven rest my soul?
...
Be careful what you wish for in the end
