Why have two different programmes? I would like to be able to display midi files in BIAB / use the 16-channel mixer (see separate post). If not able to combine, then perhaps launch a subset of RB from BIAB (currently I have both running and have to swap back and forth / cut and paste ....)?
There are numerous overlaps between the two, and it would be far easier to set up instruments / channels / input / output etc. once.

Though I am not an expert in either program I believe I can safely say the short answer is because BIAB and RealBand address different sets of user needs and desires.
BIAB strengths are structuring a song, creating midi tracks as well as meeting performance and educational needs. RealBand strengths are manipulating and processing multiple audio tracks while also accepting BIAB files. There are things RealBand can do with RealTracks (such as multi-riffs) that would be extremely difficult to implement in BIAB. At the same time few users would expect to use RealBand to develop a realistic midi guitar strumming pattern or unique midi walking bass line.
RealBand combines features drawn from a traditional DAW, PowerTracks, and BIAB.

OK, fair comment, and as I haven't got into Audio tracks yet I bow to your superior knowledge. However, I would still like to be able to flow from one to the other much more easily and have only one set of MIDI / Audio setup / Patch selection (e.g. higher bank selection in Realband) etc.
Probably comes form the fact that I still use a lot of MIDI stuff combined with Realtracks and I don't have enough MIDI manipulation tools in BIAB, so I have to go to RB for that.

You can have both programs open at the same time and drag files from BB to RB without much problem.
I like that they are 2 different programs and serve 2 unique aspects in my music creation.
I very often have them both open at the same time as I work on a song and render my audio files in RB. If I need to fix or tweeze anything, it's a quick fix to jump to BB, correct something and then back to RB to render it again.
Mostly though, I write in BB and render the tracks as audio in RB before moving to another DAW to finish the songs.

I agree Parmstro, it seems to me that RB already has about 70% of BIAB functionality. I know I can drag and drop but it's never felt like a very smooth process and it increases the strain on my computer resources.
