More modern references:

Tyler Ward made his fame on YouTube by doing very inventive and better than the original covers of Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Eminem songs.

The social media crowd loved him/favorited him to worldwide fame. Most of the Taylor Swift cover songs are gone from his YouTube channel (which has over 1.5 million subscribers). But there's a section of cover songs (probably 30) on his YouTube channel, each of which could be argued are better than 'the original'.

This one is particularly interesting - using an iPhone mic as input into Logic, of a Christina Aguilera original. This one has nearly a million views.
