Here is my Home DAW - this machine is huge... and load time sucks.

Dan,
When BIAB boots up, do you have special settings such as "at boot up 'open previous song'"?

Here's the most recent load times for my system, submitted to balance out the reporting. All the recorded times are within 1 second of the fastest loading of 4.5 seconds.
That's the what - don't know why.
- Bootup time in millseconds =4,500 [4/2/2014 11:51:43 PM] **** New Session started at : 4/2/2014 11:51:43 PM - Bootup time in millseconds =4,719 [4/2/2014 11:40:44 PM] **** New Session started at : 4/2/2014 11:40:44 PM - Bootup time in millseconds =4,958 [4/1/2014 11:27:19 PM] **** New Session started at : 4/1/2014 11:27:19 PM - Bootup time in millseconds =5,059 [4/1/2014 12:01:20 AM] **** New Session started at : 4/1/2014 12:01:20 AM - Bootup time in millseconds =4,988 [3/30/2014 11:29:11 PM]
Seems pretty fast. BIAB resides on a plain Jane hard drive, but is kept defragged and optimized. Nothing unusual on the set up - i7; 16 GB ram; Windows 7.
A side note: The 'yellow box' report log is very interesting in itself. Thanks for reminding me of its existence.

Bit late to the Party but here are my results. Not impressive. It HAS got this bad since the upgrade from 2013. Prior to it, I would be able to boot up to a useable screen in under 10 secs. - Bootup time in millseconds =36,779 [03/04/2014 09:50:36] - Bootup time in millseconds =7,881 [01/04/2014 14:34:51] - Bootup time in millseconds =7,859 [01/04/2014 13:31:37] - Bootup time in millseconds =34,479 [01/04/2014 13:28:58] - Bootup time in millseconds =8,201 [31/03/2014 21:58:39] - Bootup time in millseconds =8,304 [31/03/2014 19:34:46] - Bootup time in millseconds =7,931 [31/03/2014 17:57:16] - Bootup time in millseconds =32,693 [31/03/2014 16:34:51] - Bootup time in millseconds =10,665 [26/03/2014 10:59:35] - Bootup time in millseconds =32,268 [25/03/2014 10:09:11] - Bootup time in millseconds =8,222 [24/03/2014 21:43:08] - Bootup time in millseconds =7,735 [24/03/2014 20:40:27] - Bootup time in millseconds =8,586 [24/03/2014 20:35:17] - Bootup time in millseconds =32,510 [24/03/2014 11:33:06] - Bootup time in millseconds =32,699 [23/03/2014 20:04:45] - Bootup time in millseconds =8,202 [19/03/2014 20:01:10] - Bootup time in millseconds =8,238 [19/03/2014 19:56:24] - Bootup time in millseconds =25,400 [19/03/2014 19:46:48] - Bootup time in millseconds =34,385 [19/03/2014 12:05:56] - Bootup time in millseconds =8,225 [18/03/2014 21:01:56] - Bootup time in millseconds =32,905 [18/03/2014 20:58:20] - Bootup time in millseconds =8,296 [17/03/2014 20:53:40] - Bootup time in millseconds =34,460 [17/03/2014 18:59:06] - Bootup time in millseconds =34,692 [17/03/2014 10:18:14] - Bootup time in millseconds =8,407 [13/03/2014 21:03:53] - Bootup time in millseconds =35,100 [13/03/2014 20:57:13] - Bootup time in millseconds =8,821 [12/03/2014 19:53:57] - Bootup time in millseconds =8,169 [12/03/2014 16:38:43] - Bootup time in millseconds =13,124 [12/03/2014 16:38:15]
Seems to me to be the first Boot up of the day that is long. Provided I keep the PC running, later BB bootups are in the 8 - 10 sec region.
cheers ian

PG, In my effort to keep this flame burning... I would be pleased to offer my service to beta test an upgrade patch to resolve this mystery. I have BIAB running on both a Win7 and Win8 machine and am experiencing some of the longest boot times and the broadest variablity reported on both of them. I can tell you my evaulation as a beta tester will get my highest priority. hehe, hope I am not being presumptuous!

Noel I do. I don't, always starts up as new 'blank' song, yet there is significant variance in the boot time.

Y'all should consider yourselves lucky....
- Bootup time in millseconds =36,212 [4/3/2014 10:14:11 AM] **** New Session started at : 4/3/2014 10:14:11 AM - Bootup time in millseconds =61,266 [4/1/2014 12:09:30 PM] **** New Session started at : 4/1/2014 12:09:30 PM - Bootup time in millseconds =36,294 [3/27/2014 1:05:08 PM] **** New Session started at : 3/27/2014 1:05:08 PM - Bootup time in millseconds =50,934 [3/18/2014 6:43:25 PM] **** New Session started at : 3/18/2014 6:43:25 PM - Bootup time in millseconds =58,278 [3/14/2014 8:19:42 PM] **** New Session started at : 3/14/2014 8:19:42 PM - Bootup time in millseconds =62,001 [3/14/2014 3:26:06 PM] **** New Session started at : 3/14/2014 3:26:06 PM
I leave it open for long periods (I'm always working on something). More annoying for me is the time it takes to "get back to work" after dropping a rendered track to a folder - returning to biab, there is the Windows "spin icon" for several minutes - like it's doing the render again.... That being said... I love the program - I could not live without it at this point... so I am content to bide my time - what's a few seconds wait - considering what I get in return...

I remember when Sampletank was first provided those with big ST libraries were reporting long load times. Somebody said that there is a setting in ST that tells it which libraries to load and which not to load. If any song that is loaded on bootup has even one of the new PG supertracks that uses a ST patch then ST will load everything. One of my projects I haven't gotten around to yet is to figure out how to tell ST what to load and what to ignore on boot up and then test the boot times.
I'm too busy at work for the next few weeks to mess with this but it could be something for you guys to look at.

As noted earlier, relaunching BIAB results in significant reduced start time.

Now that a wide range of start times has been established, I wonder if PG Music needs other info?

Regarding antivirus and the lag --
I excluded the BB: folder from MSE protection, and it made quite a difference. Look below:
- Bootup time in millseconds =8,995 [4/4/2014 7:10:10 PM] - Bootup time in millseconds =36,706 [4/3/2014 6:55:30 PM]
April 3rd (lower listing) was prior to exclusion @37 seconds, while it only took 9 seconds when MSE didn't scan the BB: folder.
After excluding BBW.exe: - Bootup time in millseconds =7,387 [4/5/2014 9:11:35 AM]
FWIW.

OK, turns out I did not have these excluded. So when I do:
After Excluding: Bootup time in millseconds =7,445 [4/4/2014 8:23:08 PM]
Before Excluding - Bootup time in millseconds =36,327 [4/4/2014 5:54:52 PM]
We have seen the faster second loads in the past. Given that I rarely turnoff this machine I didn't think this could really be a factor. Time will now tell if the AV exclusion (the whole c:\bb folder) really helps.
Its the next day now, and the machine has not been turned off:
Bootup time in millseconds =6,227 [4/5/2014 8:10:58 AM]
Now for the test. I am going to shut down the machine and restart.
- Bootup time in millseconds =14,651 [4/5/2014 8:16:33 AM]
Still some large variation going on, but the magnitude of the time appears to be significantly decreased by excluding the c:\bb folder from AV scanning during startup.

Bob Hi Bob I'm interested if that start-up time without the MSE scan is consistent over multiple starts, including after computer reboots. Many other users (myself included) got wide-ranging start-up times with the A/V scan included. Thanks Trevor

Thanks Trevor Hi Trevor: I launched BIAB again this evening and got this: - Bootup time in millseconds =7,059 [4/5/2014 5:08:49 PM] That's pretty close to my earlier startup with MSE excluding bbw.exe. Obviously, not enough samples for statistical significance, but the similarity suggests that excluding bbw.exe from antivirus probing may be the way to go. Bob

I don't have that option on my latest mac BIAB version to check load speed....but this week I bumped my 2011 iMac up to 32g RAM and everything is flying. I can re-gen and render much quicker. In fact, I loaded every memory intensive program I have, Logic Pro X, BIAB, Amadaeus, iTunes, Pages, iMovie, Safari and 4 photo editing programs -- and the result was a usage of "only" 10g and I could detect no slow down on any operations. I can render a track from BIAB and pop it in a Logic project in a very few seconds. I was previously running 4g. I have no idea how my load time was affected by the upgrade (seemed fast before) but overall the upgrade dramatically changed my whole production experience. And it's cool to have EVERYTHING you might need open with no issues.
