I like that little electric winder -- it's so much easier than winding by fingers.

GhinCH, I have been using this Ernie Ball electric string winder for a few years now and it works great!

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/ernie-ball-powerpeg-battery-powered-string-winder

It costs $20 USD and is worth every penny IMO.

Whenever I get something stuck in the back of my throat, I dislodge it by drinking a beer.
It's called the Heineken Maneuver.

Yeah, I've looked it up and found something similar with additional uses for me:

http://www.blackanddecker.de/powertools/productdetails/catno/KC36LN/

(The page is in German, but there probably is an English version available somewhere.)
It's somewhere between 20 and 30 Euros depending on where I buy it.

The one thing I learned from a restringing video from Taylor a couple years ago, is that using the distance to the next tuning peg as to where to put the bend in the raw uncut string is a good place to start to keep from getting too many winds on the peg/post. He shows this at about 4:45 into the video. I do the bend, not cut

Sidecutters on the pins, I don't do that, I use the little fork in the business end of the hand winder I use.

I've always re-strung string by string, to keep tension on the neck about as close to fully strung/fully tensioned as possible.

Having a mess of un pegged strings there seems like a hassle.

I'm not winding anymore - I'm locking. This is the method, and it works quite well.

I always remove all of the old strings (ideal time to clean the fretboard) and then install one at a time. Easier to stretch the strings that way.

Of course, I use Elixirs, so I don't have to do it very often. grin

90 dB thanks for the link - I will try the locking method next time I restring. I also use Elixir, traditionalists be darned!

My only issue with Elixirs is that the wound strings last SO long that I often break strings somewhere mid-string, where my bending has worn through the winding with a particular fret wire (my frets are dressed properly). This happens becuase the Elixirs stay 'live' sounding way longer, to my ear, than other strings. In the past before elixirs, I would break them almost exclusively at the saddle.

I haven't broken a string since I started using Elixirs, and I play hard.
I only use them on my A/E though. I use D'Addarios on my electrics.

The Elixirs are expensive, but we play a lot, and in the long run, they save me money. Plus, they are very easy on your fingers (as you know).

I've been using this locking method shown in the above video since the late 70's and it has always worked well.
