****** Song Summary *************
Title: Until

A song I wrote today that was inspired by the heartfelt emotions that Dani always has in his songs. Couldn’t help but think about him as I wrote the lyrics.

Hi C harlie ...

How nice of you to do this in tribute to our friend, Dani! Sounds terrific. It has that raw but eloquent sound of being there at the club and hearing it played live. Very nice, indeed! Best to you ...

Nice use of RT's and the mix is very supportive of the vocal. Enjoyed it!

Thanks for listening Greg. The RT-1030 12 string guitar sound is my favorite and quite similar to a rare, vintage ca 1959-60 Gibson Doubleneck guitar I have. I hope to one day make some User Tracks with it.

Regards,

Charlie

Hi Al & Di. Thanks for listening. I'm glad you feel the song captured the intimacy of a small club environment. That is the feel I was trying to get. To be honest, I spent more time on eq'ing the song than any other single factor. It is not the best production or mix for several reasons. LOL, not to make excuses but I had to drop the vocal track so it set back into the music to cover the on-going sounds from around the house, namely, a TV in another room, the washer, dryer and dishwasher. Luckily, the vocals were the only things being mic'd. Try as I may, I found it impossible to eq or gate everything out. At one point, the mix was so muddy you could not hear anything clearly. I'm just learning Studio One, Real Band and BIAB and only been active with recording digital music since this past January.

And Dani..... He pours his heart and soul into his music.

Regards,

Charlie

Thanks Janice and Bud for listening. It's obvious my vocals need all the support they can get, so I try to compensate by making the best choices I can of RT's in order to draw attention away from my singing.

I live way out in the country on a small farm and left to my own devices to compensate for my shortcomings in talent. ;=)

Regards,

Charlie

Charlie - that is nicely done. no need to be "making excuses" for that mix - it all works very well. The vocal is right where it needs to be - easily heard, but tucked in the mix just right. The bass and drums are a tad soft - but not much - and all the other levels are nicely balanced.

And who better to inspire you than Dani!

Thanks for your comments Floyd. I appreciate what you think and that you take time to listen and offer suggestions. I got so caught up with the guitars on this that I had actually uploaded the song to Soundcloud before I caught two pretty substantial mistakes in the lyrics. I did not hear either one during the time I was mixing in Studio One 2. So much for critical listening skills. The first, I started early with the words, "standing there" and a long 's' sound can be heard prior to hearing the words. I have corrected that but the other, around the two minute mark, I flubbed the lines and didn't realize it throughout the mix.

I assume if I correct these issues and replace the song currently uploaded to Soundcloud that I will have to re-post it here as I imagine the link to this version will no longer be valid.

I have been on YouTube just about all day watching Studio One mixing videos so hopefully I can make a discernible improvement on the mix.

Great song.

Love those turnarounds where the resonator takes over, and you've got that 1-2-3-4-1? happening with the bass and guitars, at 0:47 is an example of what I mean...I really like that, very cool, a musical hook.

Your sound, the mix, vocals, everything, well put together.

Thanks Olemon for listening. That hook was the origination of the song. I was practicing different chord progressions and combinations and hit upon it. Thought it sounded pretty cool at the time.

Thanks for commenting JosieC. My impression of Dani, from only here on this forum, is he is about as genuine as it gets. And, there is a texture to his vocals that just appeals to me.

I'm also a big fan of yours and really enjoy your submissions and respect your talent. It was fun to watch the progression over several days of 'Who Knows Him Now'.

Regards,

Charlie

Well it is quite obvious that Dani isn’t the only one that can sing with heartfelt emotions!

GREAT JOB on this song. Your vocals were spot on. I also agree with Floyd in that you shouldn’t make any excuses for this as I thought the mix was extremely well done.

I really enjoyed this one – two thumbs up.

Hi Charlie. The backing really suits your voice. Love the guitars. I upgraded for $55 on souncloud (cheapest Pro plan) which lets me replace song versions. (keep the same link). Cheers.

Charlie, A real nice tribute to Dani. The vocal sounds good on this one. Perfect choice and nice editing on the dobro. The mix is good but maybe as floyd said a bit light on the drums and bass. Keep em coming. Tom

I like this. The guitars have a certain "Byrds" quality about them..... that jingle-jangle sound that they made a hallmark of their sound.

The rest is good too. Nothing like a well placed dobro to make a song work.

The question I have is about your momentary use of equal volume doubling/harmony in only a few selected parts. (:42, 1:35, 2:27) Harmony and doubling are good to use but caution must be exercised in their use. My 2 cents is that these 3 parts could have been better executed. Be sure the phrasing is spot on between the parts, be sure the harmony notes are in tune with the main vox melody, and set the levels properly on the doubling.

I hope that is some helpful advice and understand, it's simply my opinion and not hard fast rules.

Good job on the song.
