You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

I have only had success with Fender Bullets in my MIM Strat. About the only other electric strings I have ever used is D'Addario XLs. I really like Elixir nanowebs on my Larrivée.
But back to Joe's post - Joe, do you stretch your strings or not?

As usual - my open-ended question has yielded volunteered information that I couldn't have hoped to get by asking pointed questions (e.g. - I did not know what I did not know).
I can tell you my Kramer $800 with Floyd Rose system and whammy bar stays almost perfectly in tune, while the remainder go out within minutes - but it could very well be I overwind the strings - and all those other things Mario told me to rule out first, I don't know how to do that.
nonetheless - I will pick and choose from the comments above that get the most consensus from our most knowledgeable contributors. The newer guitars I've purchased (there is a 1 - 2 year lagtime in acquisition and frequent, consistent play with me - yes, it's a little embarrassing to admit) don't come near the Floyd Rose. But as I play them more - I'll first begin paying attention to all the things you've pointed out on this thread to figure out if the machine heads need replacing.
Thanks again for all your great responses.

I change my strings often. I play music for a living.
I do not pre-stretch them at all. I do change them on a day off.
I put them on, wiggle the whammy, tune the guitar up and let it sit overnight. The next day it takes a little touch up and then I'm ready to gig. And it stays in tune all night.
I always wiggle the whammy before tuning - it said to do so in the Parker manual.
I really think the fact that the string does not make more than one wind around the tuner makes all the difference in the world. Perhaps it's not stretching at all that breaks in the string, but seating and settling around the multiple winds on the tuner's post (non-scientific guess).
I use D'Addario XLs exclusively. They come in a little recyclable plastic pouch. That keeps them from rusting in the South Florida humidity before putting them on the guitar.
While playing I bend strings a lot, so that should pull them out of tune more than heavy handedness. But both my Parkers just stay in tune all night, and often from night to night. It blows me away. And the whammy is in the floating position.
I've never had this kind of luck with my Gibson, Epiphones or LTD. It's like magic to me.
Is it the tuners? The Graph Tech bridge and nut? The almost straight path from tuner to ball end? Perhaps all of the above.
