It's always amazed me what BB could do with codified rules of music - then again, there is a difference in approaching music with the left brain vs. the right brain. But to think it's a bunch of rules that largely require rote memorization takes a lot of the mystery out of it - and this is of course a big part of it for many musicians. I tend to agree. One school of thought is that music theory is the left brain's explanation of what the right brain is doing. I like to think that the left brain memorizes the alphabet, and the right brain creates the story. I suppose a proper balance between the both would be optimal?
