Hi Guys, I have BIB and am learning how to use this to create backing tracks to play along with.
I also what to be able to record a number of live tracks of me playing, record these on seperate tracks then incororate into BIB as part of my backing tracks to play along with. Here I am looking at using my live playing as brass section backing instead of virtual or Midi.
Then I also have the sheet music for a number of trumpet/Flugelhorn duets and other multipart pieces which may not necssesarily need any other backing. If I record these then I can play along.
The question is what do I need to do this. Obviously a mic (does anyone know of a good brass instrument one), an audio to digital 'box'/mixer setup then what else?
I am assuming I can use BiB and RB to edit etc rather than another DAW programme.
Any ideas of setups you use would be most welcome.

Since you will want more than one audio track, I suggest using RealBand. You could use RealBand to mix down to one audio track that could be played in BIAB.
What's your budget for a mic? If it's over $600, I have good results with a ribbon mic on my trumpet and flugel. On the higher end, a Royer 121. Middle, a Beyerdynamic M160. With either, you will need a separate preamp capable of high gain.
Or get a good condenser, such as the AKG 414. I've done a lot of recording with that too.
If you are on a lower budget, the Shure and Rode (Australian!) lines have several good mics, such as the Shure SM57 or the Rode NT1.
BIAB 2026 Win Audiophile. Software: Fender Studio One 8, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Fender Quantom HD8 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.

For a large diaphragm dynamic mic in recording studios, many people use a Sennheiser MD 421
Pro Audio Review ranked it as the second best dynamic mic in production, second only to the Sennheiser 441-U.
It can take very high sound pressure levels, and has no noticeable proximity effect.
Back when I used to watch TV, they used the MD 421 to mic the horns on the Saturday Night Live band.
Of course if you ask 20 Recording Engineers which is best you will get 21 answers, and they will all be correct.

What's your budget?
I have recorded live trumpet with A Shure SM-58 because it was all I had at the time.
A nice condenser mic and a good USB interface running ASIO drivers should get you in the game nicely.
Check Gauge mics for a really great mic at a super price.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

I'm a trumpet player too and currently in the process of revising my setup for this sort of thing. In terms of mics, for a budget ribbon that's gotten great reviews, check out the Cascade Fat Head. It's like a poor man's Beyer: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=687685&gclid=CM7G7uq_274CFfQgtAoduR4AXg&Q=&is=REG&A=detailsI've done quite a bit of home recording in the past and am fond of ADK's cost/performance ratio. They have a mic called the "Odin," which is a a high-SPL (can handle LOUD sources), large diaphragm condenser mic. The coolest thing about it is that you can switch it to sound Mellow (more like a ribbon mic), Neutral or Brilliant. It's overall sound is supposed to be similar to a $3000 Neumann U87, though don't expect it to be quite that for less than 1/10 the price: http://www.frontendaudio.com/ADK-Odin-p/9999-11534.htmWynton Marsalis has recorded his last couple of live albums using ADK's Zigma Chi Microphone with the C-Lol-67 capsule module. The latest Wynton Marsalis / Eric Clapton CD uses the C-Lol-67 on trumpet. The upcoming Wynton Marsalis / Chick Corea CD does as well. That being said, $550 isn't a bad price for it: http://proaudiotoys.com/3-zigma-chi-microphone-with-large-clol-cardioid-capsule-p-497.html On the cheap, a Shure SM 57 with a foam windscreen will sound somewhat similar to the Beyer/Fat Head ribbon but not as smooth and warm. As for interfaces, I would take a look at the Focusrite stuff. The Scarlett 2i2 only runs about $150: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Scarlett2i2?device=c&network=g&matchtype=&gclid=COLYjvWN3L4CFdMftAodBQgAbgI hope this helps! I'm about to pull the trigger on a Zigma Chi for myself. Best, Mark
