I need to add the "hooks" to some downloaded midi tracks.

I have spent a lot of time trying to record these new tracks in sync with the old tracks. The latency delay of both my midi guitar and my keyboard makes it impossible for me to play in time.

Should I be only listening to the input without hearing the delayed recorded track the same exact way you would record with tape? What might be a better way than that to be able to play in time?

Thank you in advance for your input.

Carl

Latency means delay. You should tell us what soundcard you use. You will probably need to get a soundcard that uses native ASIO drivers.

I am using an ASIO driver.

I think it is related to how I am monitoring the input, but I have not figured out how to change that yet.

(I have been missing the old days of tape and editing blocks this week.)

Thank you for your quick response.

Ah, yes, in some ways, the old world of tape was great. Surely simpler.

It would help if we knew specifics of your system.

ASIO drivers are written by the manufacturer, and some are far better than others. Some sound cards allow for direct (zero latency) monitoring, so understanding your signal flow could help us help you. Finally, you don't have ASIO4ALL, do you? That's not really ASIO.

Is your computer pretty fast? Post some specs, or run the free Geekbench utility.

Can you record in Realband ? then you can record on another track and go to Edit > Slide Midi music.. then copy and merge it with the other track easily.

As Matt has said we need to know what your soundcard is and what ASIO drivers you are using, what your OS is, what your system's speed is etc. Once we have that information we can help you set your buffers. That should eliminate the latency issue if in fact it is soundcard related.

I guess my first mistake is that I am using ASIO4All on all of my three computers. I didn't know that was a problem and I previously had a lot of problems finding a ASIO.

I am running Windows 7 on all. My older 32 bit 4 GB memory desktop has a Creative Sound Blaster 16 which seems to work well with my Sonar software. The other two are 64 bit laptops, one with 8GBs of memory and the newest one with 4 GB of memory. The two laptops have the stock sound card which I guess is a MS something.

All three seem to produce the same result, that is a unusable amount of delay when trying to record. The common denominator is the ASIO4All. Is there a real ASIO driver that you would recommend as a starting point?

Thank you both for your help.

Hi Solidrock,

I have never tried to record in Realband. Is that what you do?

I am generally familiar with midi editing, but I have not been able to record in BiaB yet, so I have not gotten to the point of sliding the tracks forward or back yet.

Thank you for your input.

Carl according to Creative your Sound Blaster 16 does not support ASIO drivers, see here http://support.creative.com/kb/ShowArticle.aspx?sid=7358

You will have to use WDM/MME drivers for that card. You may have to play around with the buffers, don't know. Good luck as some latency was a problem for me when I was using WDM/MME drivers but that was a long time ago. YMMV.

You will have to check with your laptops' manufacture to determine what ASIO, if any, drivers that support. That info may be in our computer's documentation. If not check the device manager to see what soundcard you have then check their site to see if they offer ASIO drivers.

I hope this helps.
