I should know this, but I can't remember the solution. And I've just searched the archives for over an hour without finding any direct answer, so I've got to ask the stupid question:

When I try to export an existing audio track as an MP3 file, Real Band generates an error message along the lines of

DRIVER CANNOT DO THE REQUESTED CONVERSION

Real band 2014 (7)

any ideas?

I think it was easier to drag the track to the wav drop then drag it out and convert it to mp3 with a free app like FormatFactory (just skip the ask toolbar) Go to Task >Options >Advanced >System Context Menu.
This will let you right click wav convert to mp3.

yeahhhhhh... but ... it's supposed to work, and I'm just wondering why it doesn't work HERE

Until I figure it out, CDEX is an awesome little utility, based on LAME

I right clicked on an audio track selected Save Audio Track (or selection) as wav/wma/mp4/m4a... this brings up a window drop down to mp3 choose quality and mono if mono track then it saved to mp3.

I soloed the track audio/midi went to Audio menu Merge Tracks to compressed file and it saved to wav first then converted that to an mp3.
Had to have audio driver set to MME to get sound from the midi track Vi in the mp3.

Pat,
You need the codec installed on the operating system. Not in another software; it has to be available to the operating system.

I've had success installing the above mentioned format factory or K-Lite and it installed the codecs on the machine.

I've also had luck right-clicking the inf file from LAME and installing it that way, but apparently I'm one of few it worked for.

There is also a hack out there for the windows codec itself.. for the not so faint of heart.
Googling l3codecp brings it up as the top hit here.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

How high of a sample rate are you using? 128 works. 320 does not without some add on codecs. I save as a WAV and use Adobe Audition to convert to MP3, one each at 128 and 320. The 128 (smaller) one for sharing via email and the 320 (bigger) for burning to CD.

OK, I'm going to install a codec.

But before this thread dies: is it necessary to install a codec in order to export tracks as MP3? or should it be possible to do this right out of the box? Because mine won't export an MP3 of any type size or quality... and if it SHOULD, then I still have something wrong

It *should* export to MP3 as long as the setting is 56k or below .. but that setting can be obscure and cause confusion. If you ask it to convert to 128k, but only have the basic windows 56k ability you'll see this error.

With the correct codecs RB acts in an intuitive way. Without them I can see how one could get confused.

For whatever reason (suspect legal) PG does not include an MP3 codec. That's up to you. For my uses I find WMA files sound just fine. Most music players will play them and you can email them as well. You can find lots of online articles that say WMA sounds better than MP3, they offer more choices better coding and such. I think the reason people get hung up on MP3 is it's become a generic term for a compressed audio file like Xerox for making a paper copy of something or Kleenex for blowing your nose.

WMA is already there inside both Biab and RB, works great.
