I've been creating bass & drums only backing tracks to work on a Charlie Byrd type jazz trio (classic guitar, bass & drums), and also including a one chorus real track bass solo in each tune. This allows me to focus on comping for a bass soloist. This has worked very well for swing jazz tunes, but when I try it for any bossa the software doesn't seem to generate an actual solo, but just gives the same type of bass rhythm track. There are a very limited number of acoustic bass soloist real tracks, but there are a couple of bossa acoustic bass soloist real tracks. I've tried them with no good result, then actually tried the jazz acoustic bass soloist tracks that have given me satisfactory results with my swing tunes. But even that still gave me a walking bass type rhythm track. Is there some problem with the straight 8ths setting for bossas that somehow cancels out the soloist generator? I'm stumped (and disappointed). I really want to work on some Brazilian tunes in this way. I'm running BIAB 2010.5 build 20 with Mavericks on a Mac mini.

hello dkm,
If I understand ... you should to try solos "Neil Swainson (soloist bossa ev 140)," they are more powerful! But, above all, do not hesitate a moment ... take the version 2014! it is a treat. Now, I only play with the new sounds of "pollwinners" ... simply fantastic! good music to you, Jacques

I finally contacted the support staff and got clued in to what I was doing wrong. I didn't fully understand how the bar settings work. Since my bossa tunes has intro bars, and my bar settings were starting on bar one (part of the into), the settings were not taking effect during the repeated body of the tune. Once I reset the bar settings starting from bar 10 (after the intro and the beginning bar of the repeating choruses) everything worked fine. I had to experiment a little to figure out how to start the settings from bar 10. One must simply click on that bar to activate it, then open bar settings. It's too bad the help files are not more clear about this. If I get time I'll do a little instructional video on this and put it up on YouTube. I'm sure there are others who would like to do that same thing I'm doing. For a guitarist a jazz trio is about the most demanding thing one can do. Learning to cover the harmonic duties as well as improvise, and then comp for a bass solo takes a lot of practice, and BIAB gives one the ability to do that practice in just about the closest way as playing with real musicians. BIAB has been hugely beneficial to my development as an improvising musician. Here's a link to a video I've done using BIAB backing track (including a bass solo by Neil Swainson) for a Charlie Byrd type jazz trio (classical guitar, bass & drums): http://youtu.be/mo5Y8D901Ig

I just listened to "Just too marvelous...." Very nice. I have a question-I understand what to do as far as getting from BIAB to Garageband and finishing an arrangement there BUT what is the process after garageband to getting the finished project on video as you did on Youtube?

Let me see if I can describe the process. First I use the DAW mode to put the individual tacks into Garageband. This gives me more control over the mix so I can set the volume of each track. I find it necessary to boost the gain on the bass solo over what BIAB itself does. When I record the video I'm listening to the playback of the backing tracks as I record my guitar and vocal, and I'm recording the guitar and vocal into the same Garageband project as I'm also recording the video. In my earlier attempts I used earbuds to listen, but I found this to be problematic for my vocal performance; I couldn't hear myself well enough singing and had some intonation problems with my vocal. But I found that simply listening to the backing tracks over my speakers solved this problem. Just turn off monitoring the actively recording tracks. And my microphones are cardioid patterned so they didn't seem to pick up too much of the playback to be a problem. My video camera is a Logitech c10 HD webcam that has its own microphone. I use Quicktime to capture the video. The draw back is Quicktime has a 720p limitation, but I have no alternative since the Logitech software doesn't work with Mavericks, and since the c10 is an old camera I know they will never upgrade the software. (With my previous computer running Lion I could get full 1080p video.) After importing the raw video into iMovie and editing the video with its beginning theme and ending graphics, I drag the completed Garageband sound file onto the video. The GB sound file then exists as an addition to the movie. You can see the wave forms of both the audio recorded from the camera, and that of the GB file. Then it's a matter of syncing up the two. This is a simple process of dragging the GB file to the left or right such that the wave forms look as though they match. Listen back. When the echo disappears (or becomes negligible) you've got it. Pull the volume line all the way down on the audio that is embedded in the video, which completely mutes it, and you are left with the Garageband audio file. Save and upload to Youtube. Hope that helps. Don't hesitate to ask if anything is unclear. Thanks for checking out my video.

The guitar is recorded with a Rode nt1 (first generation) and the vocal with a Rode nt1a. Both are excellent mics--large diaphragm condensers--that are very reasonable. I'm running them through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 usb interface to my Mac mini to Garageband. The guitar is a Cordoba c10 all solid wood classical, spruce top, rosewood back and sides, and ebony fingerboard. Thanks for checking out my video and your kind comments.

(Incidentally, the audio track from the video is going into my iTunes library collection.)
