I had to have a tree removed from my front yard a couple years ago. Birds, bugs and squirels had been nesting inside for decades. It looked fine on the outside, but had been hollowed out inside so severely that it was about to fall down.
Fortunately the tree-removal guys left a piece behind that was about the size of a beer keg. The animals had done a perfect job of making a hollow cylinder with walls about an inch thick. It's solid maple and has been drying now for a couple years.
It sounds fantastic as a drum. You can hear it on some of my Youtube song videos.
