Your work around is what I mentioned above ^^
Using triplets in 3/4.
Pay attention to the popup message you saw .. it says some features like Notation are not supported.
The time signature 9/8 is indeed supported in many other features, including recording. In Realband (PT's big brother) you can even generate tracks in 9/8 .. or 11/8 .. or whatever. Just can't see the notation.
Paying attention to Popups in PT is a key to finding a lot of cool features.
