Hi everyone,
I ask this question both as a musician and as a father who wants to raise his children well.
I read that Michael Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, raised his children with a strong hand and the strictest discipline. Apparently his children could not socialize with outsiders lest they fall prey to Satan.
It made me wonder whether this discipline had anything to do with Michael's talent. Or did Michael thrive despite his family upbringing? In other words, his genius had nothing to do with the way he was raised.
What do you think?

Other Jackson children were raised under the same rules but did not achieve the same level of fame as Michael.
For that reason alone I think you must attribute his achievements to Michael.
All you can really do with your own children is expose them to music and encourage any interest they show. How many times have you read where some entertainer first learned one instrument or artform such as dancing only to gravitate to something different later on?

I would not suggest this as a part of any equation in child rearing. If true, I think this is likely more a part of his demise than his success. However I'd like the source before even considering.

From Wikipedia: Michael Jackson claimed that from a young age he was physically and emotionally abused by his father, enduring incessant rehearsals, whippings and name-calling, but also admitting that his father's strict discipline played a large part in his success.[3] In one altercation—later recalled by Marlon Jackson—Joseph held Michael upside down by one leg and "pummeled him over and over again with his hand, hitting him on his back and buttocks."[4] Michael first spoke openly about his childhood abuse in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey. He said that during his childhood he often cried from loneliness and would sometimes get sick or start to vomit upon seeing his father.[5][6][7][8] Michael recalled that Joseph sat in a chair with a belt in his hand as Michael and his siblings rehearsed and that "if you didn't do it the right way, he would tear you up, really get you."[9] Joseph admitted to whipping his children with switches and belts as punishment, but said he did not do so at random, and claimed never to have used any hard object as he felt was implied by the word "beating." [10] Despite the much-publicized abuse, Michael honored his father with an annual "Joseph Jackson Day" at Neverland Ranch[11] and ultimately forgave him, noting that Joseph's deep-South upbringing during the Great Depression and the Jim Crow years and working-class adulthood hardened him emotionally and made him push his children to succeed as entertainers.[12]

If true, I think this is likely more a part of his demise than his success. I would have to agree rharv. That kind of abuse could easily have been a contributing factor in Michael's mental illness and alleged pattern of sexual molestation of children.

Michael was wonderful in many ways, but it is also clear that he had some serious issues which he failed to deal with. People can come through abuse mostly unscathed I have seen it done, but its rare, in some senses that was a big part of his talent. IMO

As far as who gave Michael his gift; The Heavenly Father gave Michael His talent; as He does with all, no matter what field; be it surgeon, carpenter, composer etc. It is the reason we call it a gift. Of course all do not choose to use their gift for Him, when He gives it, some will say they achieve it on their own hard work, and give Him no praise for it. As far as the social behavior of Michael; a person's behavior is their own. Because for every horror story we hear, We then hear of people from great homes who commit murder and everything else. It is what a person chooses to do with their own life; and not what mom and dad did or did not do. This is why we will all stand before the judgment seat of Jesus Christ, not on what our father or mom did or did not do, but on our own actions. This is true for Michael, for Michael's father, for me and for everyone. Michaels lyrics to the song "man in the mirror" ring true

Just a thought;
could it be that being a millionaire with millions of people pouring you adoration and telling you that you can do no wrong, naming their children after you and in some cases the title of your works, that this may have more to do with some of the antics we see reported from performers; than how they were raised at home. because once again there are actors and actresses raised in good homes who then spin out of control when success hits them. Of course once again there are those performers who just do their job and go home and live fruitful and good lives, and you never see them on the entertainment shows doing wild things. What is the difference, their choices!

That creates an environment that inhibits open expression of many opinions and leads to an environment where all the sheep mimic the opinions of the punisher, because they're afraid of being smacked down publicly. Bob, you have assumed the role of "punisher" on multiple occasions in the past, and you're doing it again here. I think you are out of line, and what takes it out of bounds isn't the disagreement.. its the personal abuse you add to the equation. It is healthy to disagree by stating a respectful opposing point of view. It is abusive and unacceptable to make ad hominem attacks as part of the rebuttal.

What I still miss about some of our forum members who are gone now is not resorting to personal attacks to make their point.
Back on topic. Here in the deep south most kids were raised on spare the rod and spoil the child. Very few lucky children of my generation grew up without being hit with a switch or a belt or a slap. Back then teachers and Principals could even whack you at school. Sadly, it was considered discipline not abuse.
Did that make anybody more talented. Of course not. It only made children fearful of adults. This fear was misconstrued by some adults as respect. Then there's verbal abuse which obliterates a kid's confidence and healthy self image.
Joe Jackson's abuse of his children didn't help Michael develop his musical talent but all that practice rehearsing definitely did.
