I can record a melody with my Yamaha WX-5 wind synth, but when I try to apply harmonies to it, it only puts harmonies on a note once in a while. Ut doesn't apply them to all the notes, in fact it only does it for maybe 1 out of every 10 notes. However if I plug my midi keyboard into it and play the same melody, and use the same harmonies, it works correctly and applies the harmony to every note played. The main reason I bought BIAB 2009 is to play melodies with my wind synth, create harmonies with them, and then use the Garritan JABB to get the real horn sounds for a real horn section to my tunes.

I looked at he manual for the WX5 and played with a lot of the dip switch settings and I still have the same problem.

I found this in the faq

"I am having trouble recording into Band-in-a-Box with my Wind Controller.

When using a wind controller with a computer program, make sure to filter out most of the MIDI information that is sent from the controller. The default settings have an 'avalanche' of MIDI information, which can take up much of the CPU time reading it, or overwhelm the MIDI buffer. Other than that, you should be able to use it as a normal controller. There are Record Filter settings in Band-in-a-Box that can allow you to choose to ignore much of the MIDI information that gets sent."

When looking at my record filter settings the "note", "sustain" and "pitch bend" boxes are checked. Any ideas on what to try for the rec filter?

I downloaded the Demo before I spent $500 bucks on the BIAB 2009 Ultrapak with Garritan JABB and I had the same issue but they told me it was just because it was the demo version. Obviously that wasn't the case because I still have the same issue. I hope I can resolve this issue since this is the main reason I bought the software.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Dan

Dan, I haven't used my WX5 to input MIDI data in many years, but I do recall it gave a lot of MIDI glitches no matter what the filter. Still, it did work, and harmonies from it did work.

About the dip switches, have you looked at 'Notes' Norton's site, where he has a guide to setting the dip switches on the WX5? www.nortonmusic.com I found it really helpful.

Are you using the Yamaha VL-70 mono synth? I had better luck not using it, and going straight into a MIDI port. But please keep in mind my experience with this is many years ago.

Hi Dan

Also like Matt I have not used the harmony feature with a WX5 for some years as I found it easier to put harmonies to the melody part in BIAB - this can be done by going to Harmony along the top and choosing Melody Harmony and then select the harmony you require > hit the Edit tab and down the lefthand side uncheck the box Melody (and any other Melody double etc) and then save this as your own file = MyMelhar1 to the highest # currently 228-255

In the same Harmony dropdown along the top there is also - Thru harmony (select) - and you can do the same as above and create your own harmony by unchecking the Melody box and saving as = MyThruHar1 to the highest # 228-255

The filter comments made by someone refer to the BIAB settings > Hit the red record button > then the Filter button and check or uncheck the various boxes of filters

It's been years since I tried this, I always input parts into a sequencer and then import them into BiaB.

Try filtering out the breath data.

This product might help
http://midisolutions.com/prodrte.htm

You should be able to selectively route the data you don't want to go into BiaB to the unused of 2 ports, effectively filtering it. As mentioned, I'd try the breath data (cc2) first, as that is extremely dense. Of course, that will compromise dynamic expression.

On the other hand, if you are playing a non-pitch-bend patch (such as piano) you might want to filter out pitch bend, and use the WX DIP switch to convert cc2 to cc11 (expression volume) and see if that works for you.

If you really need both, I would
1) create the basic arrangement on BiaB
2) export MIDI
3) import MIDI to a software sequencer
4) play the WX5 into the software sequencer
5) thin the data (many sequencers have thin data options and you can thin out redundant values or values closer than a particular value - something like "thin values closer than 2")
6) export the melody only as a MIDI file
7) import the melody back into BiaB
8) harmonize

I've had good luck with this method. It takes more time, but if it makes the final product better, I figure it's worth it. After a while you will get a feel as to IF you need to filter any data rather than redundant values, and how much (always save a separate copy of the sequencer file before thinning anything more than the redundant data).

Good luck,
Notes

Take your time. It sounds like we can learn from your experiments.

Ok here goes... (I am using it straight into the computer with no sound module or anything in between.

I tried Matt's idea of going to the notes section of Norton Music and I changed my dip switched to match that site.

That didn't do the trick.

Then I tried Jazzman's idea of creating a new harmony and taking out the melody and double melody.

That didn't work either.

Then I went to the record filter under prefs and unchecked the sustain pedal and pitch bend and that seemed to do the trick!

I am sure I will have more questions later...

Hi Dan,

I am pleased that you found the filter page which I suggested in my previous post and it is working

"The filter comments made by someone refer to the BIAB settings > Hit the red record button > then the Filter button and check or uncheck the various boxes of filters"

And also thanks for the feedback which is always welcome and not often forthcoming

Glad to hear that things are working. The wind controllers send a huge amount of pitch bend. As I recall, 1000 pitch bend events for every note on is not unusual. So filtering it out is .the way to go

Filtering has always worked for me.

And since much of the filtered data can either be redundant, or of a type of data that the particular patch you are using might not even respond to, it just makes good sense to filter it. The MIDI stream bandwidth is limited, and there is no sense making your file bigger by including a torrent of unused data.

In other words, if playing a piano, vibe, organ, or other patch that doesn't respond to pitch bend anyway, why clutter up the sequence and MIDI stream?

If the patch doesn't respond to breath control, why clutter them up with CC2?
