I'm not sure if this is the Forum where I saw a reference to Don Grusin's Catwalk, but if it is, then the jazz musicians who hang out here and rarely (or ever) visit the User's Forum are in for something. Real horn players. Check it out:

PS If I'm wrong about this being the Forum where the topic came up, then apologies to all.

It might have been me but it's been some time ago since I posted it. Catwalk is one of my favorite tunes.

This is an extremely complex tune to try to create in a DAW using midi and I seriously applaud the effort because this one is tough but I have to say brother it still needs work. You've bitten off a lot here. There are parts where the rhythm is wrong and the percussion track is really not close to what it should be. I think you can find a good latin Real Drums track that might fit and if you do find one you need to punch it way up in the mix.

Love your guitar solo but the rhythm section behind it isn't happening. Can't hear the bass. The main part of the head really sounds disjointed. You did the bridge pretty good with the horns but then the end of the bridge horn part timing is off quite a bit. I like what you did with the outro.

This is a great tune, keep working on it. And please don't take this the wrong way, I'm just commenting on what I'm hearing. I love this tune and I have thought about doing it but keep going, naaaa. Very difficult tune to try to sequence.

I don't know if you've seen this but check it out:

Obviously you're not going to get a sound like this in your computer without mega thousands of plugins, a top flight DAW and years of experience in how to use it all. But what you can do is listen to the mix in this YT recording and duplicate the balance of the instruments.

Hey Bob,

Good to hear from you. I rarely - OK, never - get this kind of insightful, constructive feedback from the User's Forum. One of the problems with putting this tune together was embedding the live players and doing the bass and keyboard parts myself. There's also a midi violin in there that I forgot to mention.

The idea was not to produce a note-for-note replica of the tune or try to trick listeners into thinking the pianist is Dave Grusin.

Like any tough tune, you're quite right about it needing more work. You hit a lot of points, some of which are the result of SoundCloud itself. The bass sounds right on many systems and is not loud enough on others. Same with the LP played by Willie Gomes (I'm not gonna mention anything about replacing him with a RealTrack).

I very much appreciate these kind of detailed comments, regardless of whether or not I'm able to perform suggested corrections.

With kind regards,

Dean Clark (aka Aleck Rand)

That's good I was a bit worried you might take it the wrong way.

I thought you may have done some isolation tricks with the original recording. I was thinking of doing something with this tune to practice with at home. Just the solo section is a pretty simple D dorian thing but playing piano comps with all the horns and percussion would be a lot of fun. I can guarantee one thing I'll never be able to do this live because none of the bands I play with have time for rehearsals and nobody is heavyweight enough to play a chart like that first time on stage without it. Heck, I would have a hard enough time playing that long intro myself. One of the live vids I found had a different player on acoustic (Dave was on EP) and even he flubbed some notes near the end of the intro.
