If you get NO signal, you probably have things routed improperly. Wrong driver, wrong input to output.....

It looks like the 44 also uses ASIO. Have you tried using it?

Another issue, many of the PCI card based sound cards lack any audio preamp so yes, you will need a mixer or a preamp to get the signal levels up to a useable level. If you have the internal (software routing) correct, you should still get a very low level signal though the card.
